The city of Ellensburg’s Natural Gas Division has earned recognition through the American Public Gas Association’s System Operational Achievement Recognition (SOAR) program and has placed in the gold-level division. The acknowledgment extends through 2028 and Ellensburg has one of only 16 systems in the country on the current gold roster. This is the highest recognition level Ellensburg has achieved, with only a select number of groups earning the award for operational excellence. The city of Ellensburg competed with more than 730 public gas systems across the nation, and received the gold level award in July at the American Public Gas Association Annual Conference Awards Ceremony in Providence, R.I. SOAR judges in four areas: system integrity, system improvement, employee safety and workforce development. “This award is seven years in the making,” said city of Ellensburg gas engineer Darin Yusi. “Lots of utilities try to reach gold status, but few make it.” Applications are reviewed by experts in the industry and scored using an intensive program criteria. SOAR examines a program’s policies, investments, training, practices and organizational culture that supports the public natural gas system. Ellensburg’s journey to secure gold started in 2020, with a bronze award coming in 2020 followed by silver in 2023. Over the next couple of years, Ellensburg strived to strengthen operating procedures, safety programs, training, asset management, workforce development, system planning and the use of industry best practices. “We are extremely proud to be recognized for the efforts of the Ellensburg Gas Division — past and present,” said Energy Services Director Buddy Stanavich. “This is an exceptional national honor and a tremendous source of pride for the city of Ellensburg.” “Together, these accomplishments demonstrate a consistent commitment to employee and public safety, responsible environmental stewardship, community service, and operational excellence,” Stanavich said. “SOAR recognition lasts for three years, after which utilities must reapply to maintain their status. That makes gold both a celebration of what has been accomplished and a commitment to continue improving.” The Ellensburg gas system has a combined 140 miles of distribution mainline which serves more than 5,000 customers.
