Leslie Singerman, the owner of Progressive Realties, is well known throughout the Greater Montreal area for providing top-notch real estate solutions for both buyers and sellers. He also takes pride in working with out-of-town families who are liquidating the properties of their late loved ones, and is about to launch expiredlisting.ca, a website designed for homeowners whose properties failed to sell the first time, resulting in expired listings.
What many people don’t know is that Singerman is also an accomplished drummer with a lifelong passion for music. At 67 years young, he still feels like someone in their teens. “At four years old, my mother was watching I Love Lucy,” Singerman told me. “I went to the piano and banged out the theme song. She knew then that I had talent and enrolled me at the Gabor Bartha Music School for Children on Décarie Boulevard. I never wanted to leave.”
While Singerman appreciated the experience, piano was never his true passion. Instead, he found himself hanging around the percussion room whenever he had the chance. He even tried playing the accordion, but — in a story similar to that of one of his favourite drummers, Joey Kramer of Aerosmith, who also started on the accordion — it wasn’t for him. The drumsticks originally belonged to his brother, but it was Singerman who naturally found the rhythm.
West Hill High School in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce is where he played in the school band and participated in music exchanges where his passion truly flourished. After graduation, he stepped away from drumming until his late 40s, when he reconnected with a friend and formed Madgloryband, a classic rock group that perfectly matched Singerman’s musical tastes. For five years, during a period that coincided with his transition from the garment industry into real estate, they performed at charity events all over the city. Eager to improve, Singerman attended numerous Montreal drum clinics and pop-up sessions featuring Styx drummer Todd Sucherman and Genesis drummer Chester Thompson. Every time he sat behind his drum kit, he found his happy place, forgetting everything around him and simply living the dream.
In 2014, Singerman joined my band, the Daylite Vampires, playing party favourites and classic rock hits. This took him even deeper down the musical rabbit hole. Learning new songs and discovering new ways to express himself only strengthened his passion. His love of the backbeat helped shape not only his musicianship but also his approach to everyday life. Whether performing on stage or working in real estate, he learned to think quickly, adapt, and always strive for excellence.
Later, he joined Benny and the Healers, spearheaded by Dr. Benjamin Saleh. The band performs at various venues and is well known for its appearances at the Maimonides Foundation’s annual Battle of the Bands at MTELUS. Singerman has performed at the event three times and even had the opportunity to share the stage with Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy, who joined the band for one of their songs.
Without music, Singerman says he wouldn’t feel nearly as young or energetic. Despite experiencing some health challenges over the past few years, including undergoing hip replacement surgery earlier this year, he continues to push forward.
Playing in front of an audience gives him tremendous pleasure and satisfaction. Simply knowing that people are having a good time is reward enough. Music isn’t a job, it’s a way of life. It keeps him young at heart, and performing motivates him to stay physically strong. “There is no age in music,” he says. “It just flows.”
As a musician myself, I believe music keeps our souls young and helps us maintain a positive attitude. “You can’t go out on stage with a poor attitude,” Singerman added. “The audience will notice it immediately. You have to give it your all because you’re there to entertain.”
Singerman says music keeps him young, but above all, staying healthy, being there for his daughters, cherishing his adorable granddaughter, and having the opportunity to continue sharing life with his 97-year-old mother are the rhythms that truly keep him going.
