CANARI funds six environmental advocacy projects across the Caribbean
The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute, or CANARI, and Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance announced their support to climate justice advocacy led by six civil society organizations through small grants awarded under the Caribbean Sea Innovation Fund’s Climate Action Facility.
The grants, according to a released statement, enable grass-roots and national civil society organizations to roll out advocacy projects across several Caribbean countries. The initiatives target a wide range of climate justice priorities, from empowering and recognizing the role of women in the agriculture and fishery sectors to documenting the impacts of hurricanes Beryl and Melissa and advocating for equitable climate resilience solutions, according to a released statement.
“These initiatives also aim to develop practical tools to support inclusive emergency shelter access for vulnerable and marginalized communities, as well as raise awareness of human rights and increase public participation in environmental decision-making and governance across the Caribbean and help advance the work of the Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance, according to the statement, which noted that the alliance brings together over 80 civil society organizations, grass-roots activists, academics, creatives, the media and other non-state actors regionwide “to amplify voices from the frontlines of the climate crisis and enhance their influence on policy and practice.”
The grants were awarded to Alliance for Rural Communities of Trinidad and Tobago, Equals Inc., Island City Lab, Jamaica Environment Trust, The Crystal Clear Initiative for Trinidad and Tobago and the University of the West Indies Center for Resource Management and Environmental Studies and its Voices from the Shore Theater Collective.
Funding for the projects ranged from $1,500 to $8,000 and was made possible through generous support from the Open Society Foundations to CANARI and the Caribbean Climate Justice Alliance.
According to the statement, the initiative is co-chaired and convened by CANARI, a regional technical nonprofit institute, which has been working across the Caribbean islands for 35 years and focuses on biodiversity and ecosystems, equity and justice, participatory governance and resilience. Its mission is to promote and facilitate stakeholder participation in the stewardship of natural resources in the Caribbean.
Further, it noted that the Alliance’s work centers around implementing the Caribbean Climate Justice and Resilience Agenda 2023-2030, which sets out priority needs and actions for promoting climate justice and building local resilience.
