Sun Oil doles out 5,000 bags with school supplies
Sun Oil Limited doled out nearly 5,000 bags containing essential school supplies in Abaco, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama, and New Providence, and also donated school supplies to Long Island and San Salvador, as it took its annual back-to-school initiative into communities across The Bahamas.
“Our back-to-school initiative is about much more than distributing backpacks and school supplies,” said Fabian Fernander, group marketing manager, Sun Oil Limited. “It reflects our belief at FOCOL that being part of the communities we serve means showing up in meaningful and practical ways.”
In Abaco, the back-to-school initiative became a community experience. Families spent the afternoon together enjoying activities, while students received supplies, with support from Sun Oil’s longstanding relationship with the Pilot Club of Abaco and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.
In Grand Bahama, Sun Oil officials said the lesson was the power of established relationships. Existing community partners helped extend their reach, and they worked through their trusted relationships to help resources travel further and more intentionally.
Exuma, they said, showed them something different, again. On a Sunday, the Sun Oil team moved from settlement to settlement rather than waiting for families to come to a single location. They met people as they left religious services, connected with families within their communities and even encountered young people while visiting beaches.
Sun Oil officials said it became a reminder that community engagement sometimes means leaving the program behind and simply going where people are.
The final initiative in Eleuthera brought another lesson. During a one-day journey through North, Central and South Eleuthera, more than 500 bags were placed with schools after consultation with education officials and administrators. Principals and designated school leaders were entrusted to identify where the resources could have the greatest value.
Moving from island to island, Sun Oil officials said, gave their team an opportunity to see how differently communities respond, connect, and mobilize around their young people. Rather than applying one model everywhere, the experience they said, reinforced the value of understanding how each community worked and partnered with the people who already know it best.
Sun Oil officials said their response underscored that educators often understand needs invisible to the wider community.
“Taken together, these experiences offer a story that extends beyond the distribution of backpacks,” said Sun Oil via a press release.
“Education creates opportunity, and we are proud to support students and families as they prepare for a new school year,” said Fernander. “This year’s initiative was especially meaningful because of the reach we were able to achieve across The Bahamas. From Abaco, Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Exuma, Long Island, San Salvador and Nassau, our teams worked together to place thousands of backpacks and school supplies directly into the hands of students. That kind of reach takes tremendous coordination, but more importantly, it takes people who genuinely care.”
Fernander said he was proud of FOCOL’s team members who gave their time and energy to make the initiative possible.
“As we wish students across The Bahamas a successful school year, our hope is that every child we reached begins the year feeling encouraged, prepared, and supported. For FOCOL, investing in our communities and in the next generation is part of who we are, and we look forward to continuing to find meaningful ways to make a difference”
As Sun Oil marked 20 years of operating within Bahamian communities, officials said it should mean more than being commercially present. And that it should also deepen an organization’s understanding of the communities it serves and its ability to respond in ways that respect what makes each one different.
