Do diminishing returns limit shelter success? When I read of a warning that the proposed low-barrier Anchor Resource Center at 333 E. Washington Blvd. will likely be an example of the unintended consequence of “learned helplessness” for recipients of services (Letters, Aug. 11), I am left pondering the following hypotheticals. Among the people living on the streets of Fort Wayne, suppose 50 are found receptive to help in changing direction and building better lives through the presence and interventions of the center, while the remainder may not be receptive. Would you decide in favor of creating it for the sake of the 50? What if there are five fewer than 50 reformable people? Would you decide against it because of those five? What if only 40 are found ultimately reformable? Forgive me for presuming your patience if I go on. What if only 30 are found there? What if there are no more than 20? Please don’t grow angry if I speak up this last time. What if there are at least 10 found there? How will you decide? David A. Peppler Columbia City Follow the money on politicians’ interests Our president has started his newest, illegal money-making scheme. This one involves Trump Media and Truth Social. For a $100,000-a-month subscription to a Trump Media service, you get early information on business news releases. With this information, you can make a lot of money trading stocks, knowing things before the general public. This fits right in with his Truth Social platform. We see him making dozens of posts a day about various topics. He may post that the war with Iran will be over in a couple of days. He may post that the Strait of Hormuz is open for business. He may say that he has ordered defense companies to up production. He recently told oil companies they are making too much money and need to reduce the price of gas. He may announce new tariffs. Regardless of whether these things happen or not, they make the stock market move. So with that early information, a person can make a lot of money. Once again, Republicans will not push to stop him. Perhaps they are in on the money-making train. Our government resembles a mafia-run organization. Some of the actions are similar to Ponzi schemes. If a politician is in his position just to make money, he does not deserve your vote. Research the candidates. Don’t vote for the ones who take money from big business or foreign countries because that is who they will be working for. Brent McBride Fort Wayne Litter disposal is matter of civic pride Fantastic opinion piece by Malak Heiny (“Pick of the litter,” Aug. 13). I have been thinking the same all my adult life. I live off a main thoroughfare in northwest Allen County and am constantly picking up trash in our front yard since we moved here many years ago. It’s a great place, but the people who drive by and throw trash out must not have as much respect for themselves and our community as we do. It is very disheartening to realize people do not care about our public spaces and are too lazy to keep the trash in their cars or on their person until they get to a trash container and throw it away. It doesn’t take any additional effort to accomplish this, plus it keeps our city void of trash. Please, everyone, think again before you throw trash out your car window. You’re making us look like a careless, trashy society. Keep your trash to yourself and dispose of it properly. Jack Rhoades Fort Wayne
