В Денисоне (Техас) 152 года спустя после первого звонка открылся новый учебный год

DENISON, Texas (KTEN) — This bell hasn't welcomed students to class in years, but 152 years ago, it rang in the brand new school year for the very first time. In 1874, the first free public grade school in Texas — Washington School — opened in Denison. "When the students all started going to school, they wanted there to be a bell,” Hander explained. “So actually all of the kiddos raised money to purchase a bell, and by December 18th, 1874, it was installed." The bell originally served a simple purpose, ringing students in and out of class. But in 1914, when Denison High School was erected in the same location, the bell took on new heights. It became the heart of a giant clock tower atop the building, chiming on the hour — and every half hour. "You could hear it, they said, all throughout town," Hander said. Jerry Hatfield, a 1960 Denison High School Graduate, remembers the traditions that grew around the bell. "Before you graduated from the junior high, most boys tried to make the climb to the top of the clock tower and ring the bell, which was pretty delicate to do," he said. Hatfield remembers his cousin once challenging him to make the climb. The problem? Hatfield was terrified of heights. "I just about backed out, but I went up ahead,” he recalled. “We get to the top, ring the bell, and all of a sudden he tells me, he said, ‘We gotta get out of here.’ And I said, 'Why?' and he said, 'The police will be here any minute.' They arrived and I was already in my car and gone." When the 1914 high school was demolished in 2007, staff made sure not to let that relic die. "It was brought out here and dedicated, it got restored, and then they dedicated the bell for the new high school and they did that in 2016," Hander said. Today, the bell stands as a testament to Denison's commitment to education. "In 1874, when our city didn't have much money, they invested in our children and our youth, and we're still doing that today,” Hander said. “It's just such a great reminder of public education, and being able to rally around something and be Yellow Jackets." One-hundred and fifty-two years later, the bell may no longer be ringing to welcome students into class, but it still stands as a reminder of Denison ISD’s earliest days, as students and teachers get ready to ring in another school year this Thursday.
