WSU Gospel Choir brings Apple Cup cheer with dazzling fight song rendition

SEATTLE, WASH- The Apple Cup presents an opportunity for alumni from far and wide to reunite. “I’ve been singing since I could probably speak,” Sharon Solomon said. Solomon is an alumna of Washington State University and the former choir director of God's Harmony. “My parents could never shut me up,” Solomon said. “When I moved, they said the house is so quiet; sorry I took my noise to WSU.” She first discovered God Harmony on a tour of WSU and knew it was the student club for her. “God's Harmony is a gospel choir that started back in 2001,” Solomon said. Started by a student, Trenicsia Horton-Bellinger, who missed singing in her church, it became a safe place that offered community for many. Solomon explained that the black community at WSU was small, and with many far from home for the first time, this was a way to make home feel not so far away. “The love of music, I think, brought people together,” Solomon said. Initially, practices took place in the Stevenson dorms; a year later, it was an official club umbrellaed under the Black Student Union. “WSU offers so many opportunities... to start things that you feel other people will connect to and be able to relate to, which is one of the amazing things about WSU,” Solomon said. One thing the group is famous for—its rendition of the fight song. “We don't know the history of the song,” Solomon said, “Somebody was creative enough and put their own little juices to the fight song.” Yes— it’s a song with an unclear history, but a song that has the power to bring so many together. “It brings me joy every time, [I hope you have the same] fun that we get to experience singing,” Solomon said. Now, new generations of Cougs are learning the song right now on campus, almost 26 years after the group was founded. A group Solomon is proud to have been a part of. “To see it still shining, still growing, it brings me so much joy,” Solomon said. Oh, and she says—you’re welcome to learn it too. “I hope you enjoy it,” Solomon said. “I hope you learn it and sing it the way that we do. I just hope that everybody finds the joy and excitement that we have in singing.”
