It’s taken several years, but Brian Lock, the owner and founder of the Santa Fe Brewing Co., is about to realize his goal of opening a location in Southern New Mexico. Lock said he began exploring the idea all the way back in 2019, but it wasn’t until this March that he finally began looking for a location. He quickly found one — a 2,900-square-foot building at 901 E. University Ave. in Las Cruces adjacent to the New Mexico State University campus. “It’s a natural fit for us to sell beer down there,” Lock said, explaining he’s been trying to expand the Santa Fe Brewing Co. footprint across the state for several years. The company already sells some of its more popular styles in retail locations in the southern part of the state, he said, but having the Las Cruces location will give him a foothold to serve his beers on tap. Lock said the space he is renting is ideally suited for his operation. “It was more or less built to be a taproom,” he said. Another factor that made it attractive is that the building’s owner is a longtime friend of Lock’s, he said. The taproom will serve food, as Lock has reached an agreement with Santa Fe’s Fusion Tacos to lease and operate the kitchen, much the same as that company has done with other Santa Fe Brewing Co. taprooms in Santa Fe. Lock said he is hoping to open the new taproom sometime between Sept. 15 and Sept. 22. “I’m super excited about just expanding our brand to the southern part of the state,” Lock said. “I think there are a lot of people there who enjoy our products. And this is a new opportunity for them to try the specialty stuff we do.” All in the flour at new pizzeria Serving a mix of classic Italian dishes, pizzas and paninis, the newly opened Amalfi Pizzeria opened in mid-July in the space formerly occupied by Pizzeria Espiritu. Owner and manager Sophia Maloney said she and her partner in the venture, Jose Montalvo, have come up with a few creations of their own to round out the menu at the eatery, located at 1722 St. Michael’s Drive, Suite A. One of the more distinguishing features at the restaurant, she said, is the flour it uses in its pizzas, which are made with high-quality Caputo-brand flour, made in Italy. “It essentially changes the entire way it tastes, the way it forms,” Maloney said. “It makes it a lot softer and a lot denser.” She said she and Montalvo researched several flours before settling on Caputo. “We wanted to keep everything as Italian as possible, and with flour, you’re not going to get any more Italian than that," she said. Maloney, a Santa Fe native, said she has worked in restaurants for 10 years, but this is her first stab at owning her establishment. “It’s definitely a lot on my plate,” she said. “It’s an adventure. So I’m glad to be doing it with someone else. … I’m learning a lot of life skills. It’s been very rewarding, and I’m looking forward to what I can learn in the future.” Amalfi is in the process of obtaining a beer and wine license; Maloney said she hopes to have that shortly. She said she may eventually try to obtain an additional license that would allow the restaurant to serve locally distilled spirits. “We’re excited for people to try us,” she said. The restaurant is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, though Maloney said she may soon expand to those same hours on Monday. Call 505-477-1417 for more information. Dirty Laundry prepares to air it out Santa Fe’s newly renovated midtown campus has a movie theater, a restaurant, an apartment building and other enterprises, but it does not have a yoga studio. That may change as soon as the beginning of October, when Dirty Laundry Movement owner Lauren Roberts hopes to relocate her hot yoga studio to the burgeoning district. Dirty Laundry, now located in the Galisteo Center Office Park at 2019 Galisteo St., is moving to a 3,400-square-foot space next to Tender Fire Kitchen  in the Aspect Driscoll Building at 1025 Midtown Calle Central in the Aspect Media Village mixed-use development. Roberts announced the move in March, explaining her studio had outgrown that space. Now, it appears the new location is almost ready. Roberts said Thursday that much work on the new space remains to be done, but she is hopeful it will be only a month or so before she can relocate. When the new site is ready, the move will be seamless, she said, explaining that Dirty Laundry will reopen immediately after closing the current site. While the studio specializes in hot yoga sessions, Roberts said Dirty Laundry offers heated and unheated sessions. The new location also will offer a wellness café, a dedicated bodywork and treatment room and bathrooms with showers. She said she is especially excited about the light displays that will be offered in some rooms, which she said will offer an immersive or concert-like experience to participants. Roberts said she is honored to be among the first retail enterprises in midtown. “I’m so excited to a part of growth in Santa Fe,” she said. “It’ll be cool to be close to so many eclectic clients in Santa Fe.” For more information, visit dirtylaundryhotyoga.com.
