The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the city of Pico Rivera will give the public a firsthand look at Whittier Narrows Dam on Saturday, Aug, 29. The free event, set from 9 a.m. to noon, begins at the Pico Rivera Golf Club, 3260 Fairway Drive, in Pico Rivera, and will offer guests an approximately one-mile, self-guided walking tour of the dam, which is scheduled to undergo a $735 million critical safety upgrades beginning in 2027. The three-mile-long dam manages flood risk for more than a million people and about $200 billion in property between it and the Pacific Ocean. It was completed in 1957 and is designed to hold and release water from the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel rivers. While the dam will remain fully operational throughout construction, work will require the closure of some bike paths, Streamland Park, home of the Pico Boys Baseball League for 70 years, the city-owned Pico Rivera Golf Course, and Bicentennial Park. Construction will also limit access to the storied Pico Rivera Sports Arena. The “Walk the Dam” tour will offer stations along the route with information on the Whittier Narrows Dam Safety Project, including planned improvements and regional benefits, as well as impacts to nearby communities in Pico Rivera and Montebello. The project is estimated to be completed in 2033. Attendees will also see portions of the dam not usually accessible to the public, such as the San Gabriel Rivera spillway gates. “Whittier Narrows Dam helps protect communities across the Los Angeles area from flooding, and we’re making sure it can continue doing that safely for decades to come,” said Col. Joshua Bost, commander of the USACE Los Angeles District. The event will give the community a chance “to see the dam up close, understand what we’re doing and why, and get answers directly from the people doing the work.” The Army Corps awarded the construction contract to the Montana-based Barnard Construction Company, Inc. on March 23. Pico Rivera Mayor Gustavo Camacho encouraged residents to attend the event and engage directly with the project team. People can bike or ride to the event. Designated bike parking will be available at the Pico Rivera Golf Club. Horse parking will be available at the Sports Arena. For safety, all participants will be asked to walk the event route. Registration is via Eventbrite and onsite the day of the event. For more information, visit http://WNDSafetyProject.sec.usace.army.mil.
