JON Armstrong is hoping to take a steady approach to his first trip to South America where he is keen to get his maiden World Rally Championship campaign back up to speed. The Kesh native’s form has dipped after a fast start to life at the sport’s top table, with mistakes and bad luck proving costly over recent events. But a step back into Rally2 machinery, which led to victory at the Grampian Rally in Scotland ahead of his journey to Paraguay and Chile, has given the 31-year-old a timely confidence boost. “It was nice. It was nice to go back to the Rally2 and get a solid result because when you’re at WRC level, you’re always progressing but you don’t really know to what level,” he said. “We’re racing against the quickest guys in the world, so naturally you’re stretching yourself in trying to get faster and faster. “It’s worth it then when we went to do the Grampian and it’s a good opportunity to learn some of those stages for next year. “Our pace was very good and it was definitely a great weekend. I really enjoyed it, the rally was good, the stages were good, so I can’t complain. “We haven’t had a lot of luck recently. I guess, you make your own luck too but we’re trying to get a bit of a cleaner run in WRC. “There have been a lot of results we’ve missed out on this year just with either mistakes or a bit of misfortune with other stuff. “We knew our pace was getting good but it was good to get a confidence boost to show you can still put in a good performance when you drop back down to Rally2. “It was good to see we have some good pace and some of the BRC guys were going really fast too. It was a nice confidence boost and it’s good to see that we can still drive pretty well.” New territory Having never competed in South America before, Armstrong know they face a massive journey into the unknown behind the wheel of their M-Sport Ford Puma during the next two events. But, the Fermanagh driver feels that a ‘steady approach’ will be the correct one as the action gets underway at Rally del Paraguay this coming weekend. “It’s something completely different,” Armstrong said. “I’ve never been to the continent before, so it’s going to be a very different culture and the roads are going to be naturally a different flow. “It’s going to be about getting used to the stages as quick as possible. “That’s not always easy, but I feel we also need to take a steady approach to get through Friday without any issues and see where we are and take it from there. “That’s going to be the gameplan and, OK, it’s always easier saying it than doing it, but hopefully w e can put together some stronger results between now and the end of the results in WRC.”
