В Торонто пройдет премьера отреставрированных фильмов легендарного армянского режиссера Артавазда Пелехяна

(Horizon Media / TORONTO) — Legendary Armenian filmmaker and film theorist Artavazd Pelechian will receive a major spotlight at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, where five newly restored works from his influential body of cinema will be presented as part of the TIFF Classics programme. The Pelechian Project will have its North American premiere at TIFF on September 14, bringing together 4K restorations of Land of the People (1966), The Beginning (1967), We (1969), The Seasons (1975) and The End (1992). The screening is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. at TIFF Lightbox Cinema 4 in Toronto. TIFF has described the presentation as one of the highlights of its Classics programme, which is dedicated to significant restored and rediscovered works of world cinema. The recognition has also drawn attention from Canada’s national press. The Globe and Mail published a feature on Pelechian on September 8 under the headline “At TIFF, Artavazd Pelechian, ‘our most important living film artist,’ stands alone.” The article examines the remarkable influence of the Armenian director, despite a filmography consisting of only 13 short and mid-length works made between 1964 and 2020. The Globe feature cites internationally acclaimed Canadian-Armenian filmmaker Atom Egoyan, who describes Pelechian as “our most important living film artist today,” emphasizing both the cinematic innovation of his work and its importance as a record of Armenian life and history. Born in Leninakan — present-day Gyumri — in 1938, Pelechian emerged from the Soviet documentary tradition but developed a cinematic language distinctly his own. He became particularly renowned for his theory of “distance montage,” in which images separated from one another in a film interact through repetition, rhythm and sound, rather than deriving their meaning principally from consecutive cuts. The technique gives Pelechian’s films an often musical and poetic structure and established him as one of experimental cinema’s most influential theorists. Among his best-known works is We, a meditation on the Armenian people, collective memory and the Armenian Genocide, while The Seasons portrays the lives of Armenian villagers and their often dramatic relationship with the natural world. Cannes described Pelechian’s cinema as occupying the space between documentary and fiction, exploring humanity, nature and collective memory beyond conventional narrative filmmaking. The restorations form part of a broader international effort to preserve and reintroduce Pelechian’s films to contemporary audiences. The restoration initiative was launched by Coproduction Office in partnership with Bologna’s renowned Cineteca di Bologna, with work carried out under Pelechian’s supervision. A version of the Pelechian Project was presented earlier this year at the prestigious Cannes Classics programme, where Pelechian himself attended the screening. TIFF’s presentation gives North American audiences a rare opportunity to encounter on the big screen the work of an Armenian filmmaker whose relatively small body of films has left an outsized mark on international cinema. The 51st Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 10 to 20, 2026.
