Arkansas leaders launch ‘Just Move Over’ road safety campaign JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - Arkansas House Speaker Brian Evans will join state transportation and law enforcement officials Tuesday, Sept. 8, to announce a new road safety initiative called “Just Move Over.” At 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, Arkansas House Speaker Brian Evans, along with the Arkansas Department of Transportation, Arkansas Highway Police and Arkansas State Police, will hold an announcement on the front steps of the Arkansas State Capitol for “Just Move Over.” The safety initiative aims to promote Arkansas’ Move Over Law, highlighting the role the traveling public plays in protecting people who work alongside roadways. The program, supported through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program, will provide public service announcement videos, graphics and other educational materials. The Arkansas Move Over Law provides rules for passing authorized vehicles stopped on or alongside a roadway, aiming to create a safety buffer around those vehicles. “In my district, we’ve had a tremendous amount of road construction in recent years, so I see firsthand just how many men and women spend their days working only a few feet away from moving traffic,” Evans said. “I’ve also heard far too many stories of accidents and close calls involving law enforcement, highway crews, first responders and tow truck operators.” The law currently applies to emergency response vehicles, ARDOT vehicles and others. ARDOT Director Jared Wiley said it should apply to everyone. “We should move over for someone who is not equipped with flashing lights while tending to vehicle issues on the side of the road,” Wiley said. “These individuals are someone’s husband, cousin or mother and are likely not fully aware of the real danger they are in when parked on the roadside.” To report a typo or correction, please click here.
