Стиль vessel возвращается в ванные комнаты, но эксперты предупреждают о проблемах с гигиеной и эргономикой

Sink-ahoy: The return of the vessel style sink in the bathroom Vessel sinks, also known as counter-mounted sinks, are back in style, and while I welcome their stylistic return, there are a few things we need to talk about. Counter-mounting fell from grace in the early 2000s for several valid reasons. First of all, it had a very bad reputation for splashes out of the vessel. With any sort of water pressure, the wrong sink/tap combination would drown not just the edge of the counter, but your crotch if you didn’t do an elastic bound to avoid it. This annoyance also drenches the apron of the sink and tap, making the whole area a bit of a mess. Secondly, counter-mounting, especially in exaggerated bowl styles, made counter cleans awkward, often resulting in a hard-to-reach perimeter of additional scummy grot at the underside of the sink. Deck-mounted brassware also collects dirt at the base of the pillar. Last but not least, because of its position, compared to a pedestal, inset or all-in-one vanity, the top edge of a counter-mounted sink lands physically higher. This can push the level of the vanity counter supporting it down several centimetres. For taller users who want to use that surrounding room to balance towels and toiletries, this could result in bending just that bit more. The tap, unless elevated on a plinth, requires a long pillar to reach the bowl and, if mismatched, this can produce something of a peek-a-boo look, largely obscuring the brassware you paid dearly for. With all this in mind, in their original run from the mid-1980s, pedestal styles and vanity inset s let’s address the problems that put the counter-mounted sink in the Museum of Irritating Has-beens.inks soon took the place of counter-mounted sinks and bowls as ease of use became a byword in elegant bathroom design. So, let’s address the problems that put the counter-mounted sink in the Museum of Irritating Has-beens. First of all, the tap. Counter-mounted taps can still be used with counter-mounted sinks, but it’s worth considering wall-mounts in this situation. The advantage here is that there’s more room to place the tap at exactly the right spot to project the water to the surface of the sink at just the right angle. The tap is now seen completely, and those wall mounts are trending hard for their pure line and handsome choices in brushed and bright metals. They come in a wide choice of eras and design styles. Any tap you use must deliver the water right towards the centre of the bowl or slightly forward of the back surface towards your hands. The wrong angle and fully open the tap and sink could potentially slop water onto the counter or even the floor. When researching counter-mounted taps, think about matching it to a shallow counter-mounted sink (more Bauhaus in line). This will allow the attractive exaggerated pillar of the tap to be seen, while offering a nice wide area to catch the water. To control pressure for a counter-mounted or wall-mounted tap, a typical, integrated aerator will both save water and produce a less aggressive delivery even when fully open. The fat stream of water will still look generous. Keep in mind that while growing in popularity by the day, wall-mounted taps can be awkward in a renovation, as they must be recessed into the wall. Chasing pipes and valves into walls and new positions is expensive if you’re doing a bathroom flip. A counter-mounted sink with a lower edge but wide profile will also reduce the need to drop the counter to accommodate it, and many brands, including Sonas, match their vanities to these newcomers in standard heights (80cm – 95cm). There are some new aesthetic trends to take note of in your hunt for a counter-mount. First of all is the growth of matte-finished porcelain and lightweight, matte resin sinks. I really like this fashion for its boutique-hotel feel. The only caveat is that matte surfacing demands very careful cleaning to prevent scuffs to any applied surface finish. Look for finishes that are through colours or baked-in rather than after-applied finishes. Secondly, colour is back, and you’ll have no trouble finding coloured counter-mounts, insets and vanity set sinks moving into AW 2026. I favour chic, earthy grey-based, receding colours taken from the 1970s, but it’s up to you how present you want the sink to be in your overall bathroom scheme. Terracotta and burnt orange are on the ascent. Don’t dismiss resin as a cheap material compromise for your sink. It can produce fine detail, shallow vessels and lovely angles impossible with traditional porcelain. Stone, marble and composite stone counter-mounted sinks are also widely available. Be wary of buying a pricey sink of this type from outside the EU or UK, or you might be in for an AI-image-induced disappointment and hefty import duties. Ensure any sink bought overseas will match standard EU threads. Looking for a tap – before jumping to polished chrome, investigate the latest offerings in warmer brushed metals – bronze, nickel and brass. What do I really think about this return to a fully staged surface-mounted vessel? Frankly, I would only deploy a counter-mounted sink in a cloakroom loo, or the ensuite of a very scrupulous adult. Despite every reason to love them, I think they are best used by polite grown-ups rather than rampaging kids. I’ve noticed that children have to reach into taller counter-mounts, and even in hotels and restaurants, you’ll often find them set on very low counters for just that reason. The little line or flexible caulk iced along the base of any counter-mount gathers a grey bloom within just a week or two. Add a fluted edge and we’ll soon be breaking out the toothbrush to clean it up. For an everyday, rough-and-tumble family bathroom, it’s hard to match a pedestal or undermounted sink or dedicated, freestanding vanity unit with an integrated sink set right over the storage. Added to this, I’m a silver-haired interiors writer. With the exception of those low-slung, newer styles, I’ve lived through counter-mounts before, and my style barometer is twitching “dated”.
