Эксперт предупредил Аргентину о «грязном деле» при попытке захвата Фолклендских островов

If the country tried to take the islands, people living on them would "have every reason to present themselves as victims before the world", an expert suggests. Argentina has been warned of a "dirty and ugly affair" as it continues to claim sovereingty over the Falkland Islands. It comes after Donald Trump suggested that the United States is reviewing its position on the British archipelago in the South Atlantic. The country currently recognises British adminstration of the islands. He also hinted that he would not back the UK in a hypothetical fight over the territory, pointing to a lack of support from London for his war against Iran. Argentina claims the Falklands are its territory, referring to the islands as the Islas Malvinas. The south American country has moved to enforce a crackdown on oil exploration around the Falklands, launching sanction proceedings against 45 people and companies. President Javier Milei’s office announced the new move this morning in a post on X, a day after he vowed tougher action against companies operating in the British overseas territory and reiterated the country’s claim on the area. Now, Argentinian political scientist, essayist and sociologist, Professor Vicente Palermo, has suggested that the country's citizens are "being dragged into a new Falklands adventure" with the US. He wrote: "We will withdraw our support for Britain in the Falklands, says Trump, if they do not spend what we demand on defense. "I honestly don't know what that means. The United States could hardly withdraw support it never gave. Since the 1960s, the United States has limited itself to urging the parties to negotiate. "And we know who Trump is: someone who cannot be trusted." He added: "Milei's Falklands-centric approach is as furious as his blindness. What else can he show besides this direct 'result' of aligning himself with the United States? I fear he's headed straight for a false alarm. "Let's imagine the British said, 'Okay, let's negotiate.' They sit down at the table with a delegation composed of both British and Falkland Islanders. "I don't think the United States could achieve more than that. But let's go further. "The United Kingdom concedes in negotiations that result in some kind of agreement, which certainly won't be a zero-sum game." Professor Palermo then asks his readers to imagine a "hypothetical shared sovereignty", which would be "highly complex in its various dimensions". "The islanders would have every reason to present themselves—rightly, in my opinion—as victims before the world," he wrote. "They could raise a huge fuss. British public opinion would be incensed. Facing two Goliaths: the United States and Argentina, and a spineless John Bull (to use an old-fashioned term). It seems to me that Argentina would come out looking pretty bad, wouldn't it? "Such a travesty wouldn't sit well with our finest historical traditions, nor with the best of our identity. I think there will be protests here too. On the other hand, I think that betting on the feasibility of this course of action doesn't exactly demonstrate an understanding of the British temperament. "And temperament, in international relations, matters a great deal. We should know this, because we are very temperamental. It may be that the Malvinas cause, 'the most sacred', doesn't care about anything. But Argentina will find itself embroiled in a dirty and ugly affair. What's the prize? Oil, fishing royalties? No, national dignity. But if national dignity is paramount, is this how we can look ourselves in the mirror?"
