Международный конкурс Wege Prize предлагает студентам $65 000 за разработку решений в рамках циркулярной экономики

Deadline: 04-Oct-2026 The Wege Prize is an international competition that challenges student teams to develop innovative, circular solutions to real-world problems affecting people, businesses, and the environment. Teams of five students from at least three academic disciplines and two higher education institutions can compete for $65,000 in total prize money, including a $30,000 first prize. What Is the Wege Prize? The Wege Prize is designed to encourage the next generation of innovators to rethink how products, services, and systems are designed and used. Instead of following the traditional linear model of take, make, use, and waste, participants are encouraged to develop solutions based on circular economy principles. The competition focuses on solutions that: - Eliminate waste and pollution. - Keep products and materials in use at their highest possible value. - Regenerate natural systems. - Create value for people, businesses, and the environment. - Address real-world environmental and social challenges. - Encourage collaboration across different academic disciplines. The competition is particularly suited to students interested in circular economy, sustainability, environmental innovation, product design, engineering, business, technology, social innovation, and systems thinking. What Is the Circular Economy? A circular economy is an economic model designed to reduce waste and make better use of resources. Unlike a linear economy, where materials are extracted, transformed into products, consumed, and eventually discarded, a circular economy seeks to keep materials, products, and resources circulating for as long as possible. Key circular economy approaches include: - Designing products to last longer. - Reusing and repairing products. - Recycling materials. - Repurposing waste streams. - Sharing products and services. - Using renewable resources. - Designing systems that restore natural ecosystems. For the Wege Prize, teams are expected to apply these principles creatively to solve complex problems. Wege Prize Prize Money The competition offers a total of $65,000 in prizes to successful teams. The stated prize distribution includes: - First place: $30,000 - Second place: $20,000 - Third place: $10,000 The competition therefore provides both financial recognition and an opportunity for students to develop and demonstrate innovative circular-economy solutions. Who Is Eligible? The Wege Prize is open to interdisciplinary student teams from around the world. Teams must meet specific structural requirements. Team Requirements Each team must: - Have exactly five members. - Represent at least three different academic disciplines. - Include students from at least two different higher education institutions. - Be internationally eligible, with students able to participate from anywhere in the world. - Include members who are currently enrolled as full-time students. Student Eligibility All team members must currently be enrolled full-time in one of the following: - Undergraduate degree programmes. - Graduate degree programmes. - Post-graduate degree programmes. Students who are graduating before May 2027 must remain enrolled through at least December 6, 2026. This requirement is important because eligibility is determined not only by current student status but also by continued enrollment during the specified competition period. What Kind of Solutions Does Wege Prize Support? The competition is focused on real-world problems that can be addressed through circular design and interdisciplinary thinking. Potential areas may include: - Sustainable product design. - Waste reduction. - Resource efficiency. - Renewable materials. - Sustainable agriculture. - Food systems. - Water management. - Climate solutions. - Sustainable manufacturing. - Circular business models. - Repair and reuse systems. - Sustainable mobility. - Digital solutions supporting circularity. - Community-based environmental solutions. - Regenerative systems. The strongest concepts are likely to demonstrate how a proposed solution can create value simultaneously for people, businesses, and the environment. Why the Wege Prize Matters The Wege Prize goes beyond a conventional student competition because it emphasizes systems-level problem solving. Many environmental challenges cannot be solved by a single discipline. Engineers may understand technical constraints, designers can improve usability, business students can develop viable models, and environmental researchers can assess ecological impacts. By requiring teams to combine different academic disciplines and institutions, the competition encourages students to approach problems from multiple perspectives. The programme also helps participants understand how circular solutions can move from an initial idea toward practical implementation. Key Benefits for Participants Participating teams can gain several benefits beyond the competition’s cash prizes. These include: - Experience working in interdisciplinary teams. - Practical exposure to circular economy principles. - Opportunities to develop real-world solutions. - Experience presenting and defending innovative concepts. - International collaboration with students. - Exposure to sustainability and systems thinking. - Potential recognition through an international competition. - Opportunity to compete for a share of $65,000 in prizes. How the Wege Prize Works Teams should approach the competition as a collaborative design and problem-solving process. Step 1: Form an Eligible Team Create a team of exactly five full-time students. Before proceeding, confirm that the team includes: - Five members. - At least three academic disciplines. - Students from at least two higher education institutions. - Students who meet the required enrollment conditions. Step 2: Identify a Real-World Problem Select a problem affecting people, businesses, the environment, or a combination of these. The problem should be significant enough to justify a new approach and suitable for a circular solution. Step 3: Apply Circular Design Principles Consider how the proposed solution could: - Prevent waste. - Keep materials in circulation. - Extend product life. - Reduce resource consumption. - Replace harmful or inefficient processes. - Regenerate natural systems. Step 4: Develop the Solution The team should combine its different areas of expertise to develop a practical and innovative concept. Consider technical feasibility, user needs, environmental impact, economic value, and the potential for implementation. Step 5: Demonstrate Value A strong concept should clearly explain how it creates value for: - People. - Businesses. - The environment. The team should also demonstrate why a circular approach is better than a conventional linear alternative. Step 6: Prepare the Competition Submission Review the official competition requirements carefully and prepare all required materials before submission. Teams should ensure that information about team members, academic disciplines, institutions, and enrollment status is accurate and consistent. Important Eligibility Conditions Applicants should pay particular attention to the competition’s team composition requirements. A team may become ineligible if: - It has fewer or more than five members. - Fewer than three academic disciplines are represented. - Members come from only one higher education institution. - A participant is not enrolled full-time. - A student graduating before May 2027 does not remain enrolled through December 6, 2026. These requirements should be verified before the team develops its final submission. Tips for Developing a Strong Wege Prize Concept Focus on the System, Not Just the Product A circular solution should consider the entire system surrounding a product or service. Think about: - Where materials come from. - How products are manufactured. - How users access them. - What happens after use. - Whether components can be repaired or reused. - How materials can return to productive use. Make the Solution Practical An innovative idea should also be capable of addressing a genuine problem. Teams should consider: - Who will use the solution? - What problem does it solve? - What resources are required? - How could it be implemented? - What environmental benefits could result? - How could the model become financially or operationally sustainable? Use the Team’s Interdisciplinary Strength The five-member structure is an opportunity rather than simply an eligibility requirement. For example, a team could combine expertise in: - Engineering. - Environmental science. - Business. - Design. - Social sciences. Each discipline can contribute a different perspective to the same challenge. Common Mistakes to Avoid Teams should avoid submitting concepts that are innovative but do not demonstrate meaningful circularity. Common weaknesses can include: - Treating recycling alone as a complete circular solution. - Focusing only on technology without considering users. - Failing to explain the environmental benefit. - Ignoring economic feasibility. - Developing a solution without understanding the actual problem. - Creating a team that does not meet the five-member requirement. - Having insufficient disciplinary diversity. - Including students from only one institution. - Failing to verify continued enrollment requirements.
