Annual Texas Archeology Fair Brings Hands-On History to Austin By Editor | August 27, 2026 | 0 Austin, TX – Texas families and visitors can experience and learn about archeology and its impact on the state on Saturday, Sept. 26, when the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and Texas Science & Natural History Museum co-host the free Texas Archeology Fair from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. The fair will happen at Texas Science & Natural History Museum, 2400 Trinity St., on the University of Texas at Austin campus. The Texas Archeology Fair will feature hands-on activities, demonstrations, exhibits, and educational opportunities for visitors of all ages. Attendees can meet archeologists, historians, tribal representatives, and museum specialists to learn and experience how archeology highlights the cultures and traditions that have shaped Texas history. A few of the organizations that will have booths or provide activities and information at the Texas Archeology Fair include The Williamson Museum, the Texas Department of Transportation, the Travis County Archeological Society, and the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory. This year’s fair will also highlight the connections and distinctions between archeology and paleontology. Through interactive experiences, visitors will learn how archeologists study human history while paleontologists investigate ancient life through fossils. The Texas Archeology Fair is a featured event that kicks off Texas Archeology Month, which takes place each October to celebrate history and heritage through the lens of archeology. Throughout the month, the THC and partners across the state provide hands-on activities and host commemorative events such as archeology fairs, demonstrations, presentations, museum exhibits, and walking tours. Archeological societies, county historical commissions, museums, and other groups will host a multitude of events this October, with support from a legion of volunteers, many of them members of the THC’s archeological stewardship program. The THC relies on its partners, the Texas Archeological Society and the Council of Texas Archeologists, as co-sponsors of Texas Archeology Month. To order free pinch-pot kits and other archeology-related materials, learn how to get involved, and find an event near you, visit the Texas Archeology Month website at thc.texas.gov/tam.
