DICKINSON — With the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library (TRPL) reaching almost two months of being open to the public, representatives from companies Amrize and Dickinson Ready Mix discussed with The Dickinson Press regarding the concrete used for the construction. Amrize is a North America-based supplier of building materials such as cement and concrete that serves projects throughout the U.S. and Canada. According to Rusty Owings, an Amrize technical services engineer, the company provided all the cement and slag, a byproduct of steel manufacturing, to Dickinson Ready Mix necessary to create the concrete used for the TRPL. He said Amrize sent more than 5,000 tons of cement and 4,000 tons of slag. ADVERTISEMENT “We basically supplied them with the glue that holds the rocks and sand together in the concrete,” Owings said. “We did almost 10,000 tons… quite a bit of material.” Owings explained that Dickinson Ready Mix has been a long-time customer of Amrize and reached out when the local business had to provide concrete for the TRPL. He noted that Amrize also helped with the concrete mix design along with providing materials, partnering up with Dickinson Ready Mix to come up with seven different mixes. Creating the correct concrete mixes were important for this project. As TRPL staff explained to The Press in March prior to the building’s completion , sustainability was the goal for the design. The TRPL involves solar panels, geothermal wells and a green roof planted with native flora. In terms of the construction materials, Owings noted that the concrete Amrize and Dickinson Ready Mix worked on together was sustainable since it utilizes eco-friendly Portland-limestone cement, slag that would normally be landfilled and fly ash, a byproduct of the coal industry. “All three of those materials combined actually make super good, durable concrete able to address the harsh conditions in North Dakota,” Owings said. “It can survive the high heat and cold temperatures.” “That was why we chose these materials in particular,” he continued. “We used as many recycled materials as we could.” Ben Olin, the vice president and general manager of Dickinson Ready Mix, said that the local business was able to surpass its goals when providing a sustainable concrete for the TRPL. He explained that the set goal was to decrease the carbon footprint of the concrete by approximately 30-35%. Dickinson Ready Mix managed to reduce it 40% over the region benchmark and 50% over the company’s standard mixes. Overall, Olin is proud of the contributions Dickinson Ready Mix made to the construction of the TRPL. “This was definitely a generational project,” he said. “We won’t see anything like this come out for a long time.” ADVERTISEMENT “We’re very excited to have been a part of it,” Olin added. “Helping build something impactful to our state and the area that we service was important to us.” Owings said there is pride among Amrize staff as well regarding the concrete used at the TRPL. “We’re proud to have been a part of this project,” he said. “Working with a local business was very gratifying for us.”
