Overview: The Academy Award-winning 1976 film about the Watergate scandal will be followed by a discussion moderated by WAMC's Joe Donohue. With the current White House occupant’s popularity hovering at basically the same percentage level that Richard Nixon had at the height of the Watergate scandal—63 percent disapproval—it seems like a good time to revisit director Alan J. Pakula’s 1976 political thriller All the President’s Men. On August 29, the Crandell Theatre will do just that, with a showing of the Oscar-winning film chronicling the Washington Post investigation that broke the story of the 1972 break-in that led to the resignation of the embattled 37th president. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion on the current state of journalism and investigative reporting moderated by Joe Donohue, host of WAMC’s “The Roundtable.” Joining Donohue for the talk will be former executive editor of the Washington Post Martin (Marty) Baron, Academy Award- and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker Anne Alvergue (The Martha Mitchell Effect), former publisher Berkshire Eagle Fred Rutberg, and Republican election campaigns counsel and Presidential Commission on Election Administration Co-Chair Benjamin Ginsberg. Released only months before the nation’s bicentennial, All the President’s Men stars Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman as Washington Post investigative reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, Jason Robards as the newspaper’s executive editor Ben Bradlee, and Jack Warden as its metropolitan editor Harry M. Rosenfeld. Academy-Award-winning screenwriter William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) adapted the Oscar-winning screenplay from Woodward and Bernstein’s best-selling original book. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, the feature also won Best Supporting Actor (Robards), Best Sound, and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration. All the President’s Men with panel discussion by Joe Donohue will screen at the Crandell Theatre in Chatham on August 29 at 5:30pm (a meet and greet with WAMC staff and the panelists will take place at 5pm). Tickets are $20.
