The product, described as a bulk small-scale NMR system, uses a high-temperature superconducting bulk magnet that operates without refrigerants such as liquid helium. That design enabled a smaller, portable form factor while maintaining magnetic field uniformity and stability sufficient for practical analysis in the 200MHz class. NMR, which uses the same basic principle as magnetic resonance imaging used in hospitals, is a method for analyzing the chemical structure of substances. It is widely used in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemicals, food and materials development, and has been a standard analytical tool for research and development as well as quality control. Conventional NMR systems are typically large and require refrigerants to maintain superconducting magnets, along with dedicated installation environments. Aisin and JEOL said the new system was developed by combining Aisin's cryogenic refrigeration and superconducting materials technologies with JEOL's NMR system and analytical technologies, in joint research that also involved the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science. The companies said the system would allow researchers to analyze synthesized samples on site rather than transporting them to dedicated analysis rooms equipped for conventional NMR measurements. The portable design could support deskside use at universities, research institutes and educational settings, as well as process monitoring and quality control at production sites.
