Afro-pop star Zee Nxumalo opens spaza shop in the UK Updated | By Poelano Malema Singer and songwriter Zee Nxumalo is taking a piece of South African culture to the UK with the launch of her first global pop-up - a proudly local spaza shop. Afro-pop star Zee Nxumalo is spreading her wings and taking a little piece of South Africa with her. The 23-year-old singer who is currently on an international tour recently took to social media to share the exciting news that she has opened her first global pop-up store, and it comes in the form of a spaza shop in South London. Zee shared several pictures of herself inside the pop-up, including one of her sitting on the counter, while another showed some of the customers who came through to support the unique store. One of the signs inside the shop reads: “Welcome to Zee’s Spaza.” The singer explained the concept, describing a spaza as a staple South African neighbourhood store - "a place to grab essentials, buy airtime, catch up, and find a little bit of everything. “From South Africa to South London, experience a little piece of that spirit today. Come in, look around, grab some chappies and immerse yourself in Zee Nxumalo’s spaza,” the post reads. The store sells a variety of nostalgic South African treats and products, including lucky packets. For many South Africans, lucky packets bring back childhood memories. These small packets were particularly popular among children, who would buy them without knowing exactly what little toy or gift they would find inside. It seems Zee’s spaza is about more than simply shopping, though. In one of the pictures shared online, the singer can also be seen playing dice alongside some of her customers, bringing another familiar part of the South African spaza experience to London. The announcement has received plenty of love online, with celebrities including Uncle Waffles, and Londie London among those congratulating the young star on the new venture. At just 23, Zee Nxumalo has already made significant strides in the music industry. Zee released her first album extended play (EP) titled 'KwaNxumalo' in 2022. Some of her popular songs include, 'Rato Laka', Mali' and 'Ama Gear'. The singer's internationl tour started in Portugal on 03 July. It was followed by performances in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and London. She is also scheduled to perform in Dublin, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Namibia, and Swaziland. Last year, she was among the headline acts at the DStv Delicious Festival, further cementing her place in the South African music scene. Her music has also touched an international audience, with the singer boasting more than two million monthly listeners on Spotify. In May, she took to social media to celebrate being featured on Time Square, in New York city. HOW TO LISTEN TO EAST COAST RADIO 1.
