Administrative issues impacting staff on NHS pension scheme
Up to 5% of nurses receiving an NHS pension could be receiving less then they are owed because of administrative issues.
The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) said that, while the majority of members of the NHS pension scheme are not affected, it had identified “administration issues” that have affected pension payments for some members of the scheme.
“Each member who is directly affected will be contacted personally by the NHSBSA and I will make sure that this happens as quickly as possible”
Karin Smyth
The issues were identified by a review of the administration processes around the NHS pension scheme, the findings of which were revealed in a NHSBSA statement published on 2 September.
The NHSBSA has apologised for any concern that these issues may have caused and that anyone whose pension benefits or payments have been affected will be contacted by the end of the year.
Backdated payments will be made to anyone who has been paid less then they were owed under the scheme, and these payments will include interest, the NHSBSA has said.
In a statement to the House of Commons, health minister Karin Smyth said that the NHSBSA team reported to the Department of Health and Social Care at the end of July that there were issues in the administration of a small proportion of members’ records, with the earliest dating back to 2008.
“Most of these issues built up between 2014 and today, and in a small number of cases, I regret to say that some are ongoing,” she said.
“As a result, while the vast majority of members are receiving the correct pension amount, some will have been entitled to more,” Ms Smyth said.
She said that she would ensure that every member who has received the wrong payment is properly identified and that the Government Actuary’s Department had been appointed to carry out a comprehensive audit of the NHS pension scheme’s administration.
“Based on what we know today, around 95% of members will be unaffected,” Ms Smyth said. “Many of those who are will already be retired and receiving a pension,” she added.
She said that no action needed to be taken by anyone who is a member of the NHS pension scheme, whether working or retired.
“Each member who is directly affected will be contacted personally by the NHSBSA and I will make sure that this happens as quickly as possible,” she said.
Ms Smyth added that the NHSBSA would continue to pay pensions promptly and reliably and to process retirement applications.
“Records will be corrected and where appropriate, pension awards updated. Where payments or increases are due, interest will be payable,” she said.
