The City of Abbotsford has announced that city manager Peter Sparanese is retiring, and the search is on for his replacement.
Sparanese has worked in public service for more than 30 years, including 11 years with the City of Abbotsford.
He has been city manager since 2018, overseeing the administration of the city’s $154 million budget and leading more than 1,100 municipal employees.
Sparanese first joined the city as the general manager of engineering and regional utilities in 2015.
Prior to that, he was the senior manager of infrastructure engineering and operations at Capital Regional District on Vancouver Island.
In that role, the achieved the 2014 City of Excellence, Gold Standard Award from the BC Municipal Safety Association.
Mayor Ross Siemens said Sparanese has been an “invaluable part” of the City of Abbotsford.
“(He has guided) the city through significant infrastructure and program advancements, the COVID-19 pandemic and two major flooding events,” Siemens said.
“We are grateful for his leadership and we will greatly truly miss his calm, steady, thoughtful and strategic guidance at city hall.”
Sparanese said it was not an easy decision to retire.
“While there is never a perfect time for an organizational transition, the upcoming municipal election presents an opportunity for new leadership to support the next council as it begins its term,” he said.
He said during his time with the city, he has worked with “some of the brightest and most innovative municipal professionals.”
“Their commitment to serving the community and making Abbotsford the best place to live, work and explore is truly inspiring. I am grateful for this experience and leave with many great memories,” Sparanese said.
The city has retained PFM Executive Search to lead the recruitment process.
Sparanese will remain with the city to support the recruitment and transition to his successor.
