Executive Producer STOWE, Vt. — A popular overnight shelter on the Long Trail is closing for the rest of the regular hiking season. Taft Lodge sits at 2,500' elevation. It is less than one mile from the summit of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak. The 105-year-old structure is the oldest, largest, and second-highest overnight site on the Long Trail — a 272-mile trail through Vermont, connecting Massachusetts and the Canadian border. Advertisement Entrance to Taft Lodge on Long Trail According to the Green Mountain Club, which manages the Long Trail and its shelters, Taft Lodge will remain closed from September 8 until the end of October to repair rotting logs. The closure comes ahead of the busy fall hiking season. Taft Lodge can usually sleep up to 32 hikers on its wooden bunks. There is also no tenting or hammocking allowed outside of the site, due to the high elevation and the risk of damaging alpine plants. Taft Lodge in winter Hikers can stay at other overnight sites along the Long Trail, including Butler Lodge (3.5 miles south), Twin Brooks Tent Area (4.7 miles south), and the Sterling Pond Shelter (5.9 miles north). All overnight sites on the Long Trail are first-come, first-served. Tenting and hammocking are not permitted outside Butler Lodge, but there is capacity for overflow tenting at Twin Brooks and Sterling Pond.
