WAREHAM, Mass. — For car enthusiasts, buying a sports car is one thing, but building one yourself is another. At Factory Five Racing in Wareham, Massachusetts, customers can buy kits containing thousands of parts and assemble their own high-performance cars at home. Advertisement The company has been turning car dreams into DIY projects since 1995. Founder and CEO David Smith says the goal is to give builders more than just a finished vehicle. “When someone builds his or her own car, they have so much pride in what they've built,” Smith said. Factory Five uses modern manufacturing technology, including computer-controlled machines, to produce precision components for its kits. The lineup includes Cobra replicas, Daytona Coupes and other high-performance designs. Rather than shipping a completed car, Factory Five sends customers the pieces they need to build one. A typical shipment includes a body, a frame and a pallet of boxes containing about 4,500 parts. Builders supply their own engine and transmission. The company ships roughly 500 kits a year, including to customers around the world. Building one is a serious garage project. Factory Five estimates an average build takes about 300 hours, although the timeline varies depending on the builder and project. For Smith, that time is part of the appeal. “When you spend a year or two building something, especially with your family and your friends, you love it more than a normal sports car that you just buy from a dealer lot,” he said. The result is more than a car. For many builders, it becomes a project, a challenge and, eventually, a family heirloom.
