SALEM, Mass. — In Salem, Massachusetts, visitors can do more than hear stories about witches; they can make their own brooms. Samantha, a Salem tour guide and broom-making instructor with Witch City Walking Tours, leads visitors through a hands-on workshop where they build and decorate their own brooms using traditional techniques. Advertisement Samantha's connection to the craft is personal. Born in New Orleans, she said she had experience with old-fashioned broom-making before bringing that knowledge to Salem. “We don't use dowels. We don't use machinery,” Samantha said. “You literally are going to bind it with your hand.” The process starts with choosing a wooden handle. For some participants, the choice feels almost magical. “I saw it, and it called to me,” one participant said during the class. Next comes the broomcorn. Participants choose colors based on their own intentions, with Samantha explaining that different colors can represent things such as love, healing and power. The class also incorporates charms and natural elements, allowing each person to create a broom that is distinctly their own. Samantha encourages participants to set an intention before they begin. “Everything you do in life is with intention,” she said. By the end of the workshop, visitors have more than a Salem souvenir. They have made it themselves — by hand — one binding at a time.
