В Модесто пожилые люди учатся всю жизнь в институте непрерывного образования

Seniors in Modesto embrace lifelong learning at MICL The Modesto Institute for Continued Learning offers seniors a chance to socialize, learn, and stay engaged through flexible classes led by peers The Modesto Institute for Continued Learning (MICL), founded in 1986, provides seniors in Modesto with a welcoming space to socialize and learn. "Knowledge is empowering. A lot of senior citizens still care. They care about changing the world, and knowledge helps us know how to engage with what's happening," said Bruce Clifton, MICL curriculum coordinator. For 90-year-old attendee Dorothy Winke, MICL is more than just a classroom, it’s what keeps her young. "The day I stop learning is, I hope, the day I die. That's it, that's my philosophy, this is, this is it. MICL I think, saved my life," Winke said. She explained that she joined the program after her husband passed away. "I know I would have sat and dawdled if it had not been for MICL," Winke said. Members emphasized that the program is open to anyone with a curiosity to learn, regardless of their educational background. "This is for people who love to learn for the joy of learning. There's no homework. You can come in late, you can leave early, you can go to any class. It's just this community," Clifton said. MICL is led by seniors in the program, and the curriculum changes every session. Classes are offered during fall, spring, and summer sessions, typically held for two hours each week. Courses are scheduled Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Modesto Junior College West Campus. Enrollment costs $75, and the program continues to provide seniors with a space to stay active and engaged. Click here for more information on the MICL program.
