Now that school's back, schedules and routes look a little different for students. "Our overall ability to serve Des Moines public schools and to provide these trips is about 80% of what we did last year," said Sarah Welch, DART's external affairs director. DART buses will make 36 school trips by comparison to 45 last year. They'll serve nine schools total, four fewer than last year. Now, students at Callahan, Merrill, Hoover, and Meredith schools will either be assigned to yellow bus routes or can take nearby DART buses for a reduced price. At bus stops, students assigned to take a bus to school should look for a three-digit number starting with nine at a stop. That'll show that they're on a school bus route. Welch said they've been working closely with districts. She calls the changes cost-effective solutions. "It really just stems from the way in which we're prioritizing service based on the priorities we heard through public input. Also, we just have less operators and less buses in our fleet," said Welch. Regardless of school bus assignment, all Des Moines Public School students can get free DART bus rides on non-school days and after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.
