Научный центр Manomet объединяет исследования птиц с экологическим просвещением

Manomet connects bird research with environmental education Manomet Conservation Sciences has spent decades studying birds, migration and the health of ecosystems In Plymouth, Massachusetts, Manomet Conservation Sciences has quietly become one of the country’s most respected bird research and conservation hubs. Since 1969, its scientists have been banding and monitoring migratory shorebirds and landbirds, collecting over 55 years of data that help track species health, population trends and the broader state of the ecosystem. Birds like the American oystercatcher and piping plover, once near extinction, are making strong comebacks thanks to collaborative efforts led by groups like Manomet and Mass Audubon. The organization’s banding lab — led by Evan Dalton, director of Landbird Science — offers a hands-on approach to tracking species such as the northern waterthrush, helping scientists understand changes in migration, habitat needs and climate impacts. Beyond science, education is central to Manomet’s mission. Through programs led by Molly Jacobs, vice president of environmental outreach, school groups engage directly with nature, holding wild birds in their hands and learning to see themselves as environmental stewards. "Birds connect us," Jacobs says, noting that the same catbird seen in Plymouth may have just migrated from Texas or Central America. As Lizzie Schueler, Manomet’s president, emphasizes, the work is increasingly focused on influencing human behavior, raising awareness about the interconnectedness of wildlife, habitats and people.
