Explore Outdoors: Crystal Basin Recreation Area Part 2 Lace up your boots and check your bike tires. There are lots of fun activities for the family at Crystal Basin Recreation Area Crystal Basin Recreation Area is part of the Eldorado National Forest, but it's SMUD that builds the trails used for horseback riding, hiking, off roading, and mountain biking. Now, if mountain biking isn't your thing, there is a 12.5-mile paved bike trail around Union Valley Reservoir that offers a more relaxing, scenic ride. And there are more than 117 miles of hiking trails. If you want to spend more time exploring the trails, stay a while. “There’s over 700 campsites available spread out over three dozen campgrounds,” said Lora Anguay, general manager and CEO of SMUD. Campsites are available for tents, RVs, and there are even equestrian campgrounds. Each campsite has a fire ring and barbeque grate as well as a picnic table. Piped water, trash containers, and toilets are available at some of the sites. Reservations can be made at Recreation.gov. And the fun doesn't stop when winter arrives. Crystal Basin Recreation Area offers miles of pristine cross-country skiing trails near Loon Lake. | MORE | Explore Outdoors Part 1: Water sports a key draw to Crystal Basin Recreation Area See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel.
