Former Mississippi Highway Patrol headquarters in Jackson demolished after DPS opens new Pearl campus
A longtime fixture near Interstate 55 and Woodrow Wilson Avenue in Jackson is coming down as crews demolish the former Mississippi Department of Public Safety headquarters.
The former Mississippi Highway Patrol headquarters campus sits at 1900 E. Woodrow Wilson Ave. and includes three buildings constructed over several decades. The original headquarters was completed in 1955, a maintenance building was added in 1956 and a seven-story annex was built in 1976, according to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
The demolition follows DPS' move to a new headquarters in Pearl earlier this year.
State leaders officially opened the 146,000-square-foot facility in April. For the first time, all 11 DPS divisions are housed under one roof, including the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and Office of Homeland Security.
Before the move, DPS divisions operated from multiple locations. Commissioner Sean Tindell said consolidating those operations will allow the divisions to communicate and collaborate more efficiently with one another and with federal and local law enforcement agencies.
Construction on the Pearl headquarters began in 2019. The facility is named for the late David R. Huggins, a former Mississippi public safety commissioner and Mississippi Highway Patrol chief who died in 2022.
The future of the old Jackson property has also drawn attention from state lawmakers.
Legislation introduced during the 2026 session proposed allowing the state to sell or lease the roughly 10-acre property for private redevelopment. One House proposal called for redevelopment as a hotel, restaurant or both, with a purchaser or lessee responsible for demolition of structures not needed for the project.
The Mississippi Department of Archives and History previously sought public comment on the proposed demolition because the three-building complex was considered eligible for Mississippi Landmark designation based on its architectural significance.
The property occupies a highly visible location near the I-55 and Woodrow Wilson interchange.

Игнатьев штраф платить отказался, заявив, что он солдат срочной службы, а одет в гражданское потому, что находится в отпуске. Командир же им объяснил что к таким солдатам не могут быть применены взыскания в виде штрафа.
