The city of Ceres was awarded an almost $1 million Proposition 64 grant to combat illegal cannabis activity.
The city of Ceres received nearly $1 million in Proposition 64 grant funds from the Board of State and Community Corrections to address the impacts of legalized cannabis.
The BSCC stated that the funds are intended to help communities manage the effects of legalized cannabis.
“As it’s always been said, you know, marijuana or cannabis, or cannabis-based products are kind of a gateway drug,” said Jeff Godfrey from the Ceres Police Department.
Godfrey explained that the city faces challenges similar to other communities regarding illegal cannabis activity.
“We are no different than any other city in regards to illegal cannabis activity. We do have smoke shops within our city that we continually monitor for illegal sales of cannabis-based products,” Godfrey said.
He also noted that illegal cannabis growing operations are a concern. The grant funds will be used to hire a cannabis code enforcement officer and expand education efforts about the dangers of cannabis use, particularly for children.
The Ceres Unified School District highlighted the importance of these educational efforts.
“As they are encountering situations as they get older, more in their lives where they may have access to illegal substances, they need to be equipped to make good decisions about their own health,” said Assistant Superintendent Dan Pangrazio.
Pangrazio said the district is already working to educate students on the dangers of illegal substances but looks forward to expanding those resources.
“It was very challenging coming out of the pandemic, and that’s where oftentimes you could see the substance abuse increasing in our students,” Pangrazio said.
