Бывшие клиенты AT&T получат компенсацию от FTC через Zelle

7 Things Former AT&T Customers Should Know About the FTC Refunds Arriving by Zelle A Zelle payment from the Federal Trade Commission can make an ordinary banking notification look surprisingly interesting. In August 2026, the FTC began sending Zelle payments to eligible former AT&T customers who previously received a refund check or PayPal payment but never completed the payment process. This money traces back to the FTC’s case involving AT&T’s old unlimited data plans and allegations that the company slowed customers’ data speeds after they reached certain usage thresholds without adequately disclosing those restrictions. The settlement dates back years, so the arrival of a payment now can feel like finding an old receipt in a desk drawer and discovering it still matters. 1. This Refund Traces Back to AT&T’s Old Unlimited Data Plans The FTC sued AT&T over allegations that the company marketed certain wireless plans as unlimited while reducing data speeds after customers reached particular usage levels. Those slowdowns, which the FTC called data throttling, could make ordinary activities such as browsing websites and streaming video extremely difficult. The settlement required AT&T to provide money for refunds to qualifying customers, including former customers who had signed up for qualifying unlimited plans before 2011 and experienced throttling. Current customers received bill credits, while former customers received payments through the refund process. 2. The Zelle Payment Does Not Mean a Brand-New AT&T Settlement This particular Zelle payment does not represent a fresh lawsuit against AT&T or a new opportunity to submit a claim. Instead, the FTC says it now sends Zelle payments to eligible former AT&T customers who received an earlier payment but did not cash the check or accept the PayPal payment. Plenty of old settlement stories float around online, and scammers love turning complicated refund programs into vague promises of easy money. The current FTC refund page specifically lists the AT&T Data Throttling Refunds program as active in August 2026 and identifies JND Legal Administration as the refund administrator. 3. The Money Goes Directly Into the Bank Account Connected to Zelle A legitimate AT&T refund payment through this program works differently from a random message asking someone to “claim” money. According to the FTC, a Zelle payment goes directly into the recipient’s bank account and includes a note about the settlement. That detail offers a useful reality check when a notification arrives. A legitimate refund should not require clicking a mysterious link, sending money back, buying gift cards, or handing over sensitive information to unlock the payment, and the FTC specifically warns that it never requires people to pay money to receive a refund. 4. Former AT&T Customers Do Not Need to Be At&t Customers Today The refund concerns a period when qualifying customers used AT&T’s unlimited data plans, not whether someone currently carries an AT&T phone. The FTC’s original claims process covered former customers who had an unlimited data plan at some point between October 1, 2011, and June 30, 2015, experienced throttling, and had not already received the related payment or bill credit. That means changing wireless carriers years ago does not automatically make the refund irrelevant. In fact, the current Zelle round specifically focuses on eligible former customers who did not complete an earlier payment, which explains why a former AT&T customer might suddenly see the money appear in a bank account long after leaving the company. 5. A Legitimate Refund Should Not Ask for Money First This might be the most important point because refund scams have a wonderfully backward business model: they promise money, then demand money to release it. The FTC makes the rule simple: it does not require consumers to pay upfront fees or provide sensitive financial information to receive an FTC refund. So if a text claims an AT&T refund awaits but asks for a “processing fee,” bank login, Social Security number, gift card, cryptocurrency payment, or money transfer, stop right there. Rather than trusting a link in an unexpected message, consumers can check the FTC’s refund listings directly by going to the agency’s website themselves, which reduces the chance of handing information to an impersonator. In April 2024, the agency sent nearly $6.3 million to former AT&T wireless customers, and the FTC’s refund records show that distribution involved more than 200,000 eligible consumers. The current round gives the agency another way to reach people who did not complete the earlier payment. In practical terms, a former customer who tossed an old refund check into a drawer, forgot about a PayPal notification, or simply never completed the earlier payment process may now receive the refund through Zelle instead. 7. When in Doubt, Verify the Refund Through the FTC A surprising bank deposit can create two equally bad reactions: celebrating before checking the details or assuming the whole thing must be a scam. The smarter move involves verifying the program through the FTC’s official refund information and comparing the details with the payment notification. The FTC currently lists the AT&T refund administrator’s phone number as 1-877-654-1982 for questions about this program. Consumers also should remember that scammers can imitate familiar companies and government agencies with impressive-looking messages. The FTC recommends checking refund information at its official refund page and warns consumers not to click questionable links in unexpected messages or provide sensitive information simply because a message uses the FTC’s name. That Old AT&T Account May Still Have a Final Surprise The biggest takeaway sits in the fine print, but it does not require a magnifying glass: this Zelle payment relates to an existing FTC refund program involving AT&T’s former unlimited data customers. Eligible former customers who failed to cash an earlier check or accept a PayPal payment may now receive the money directly through Zelle, while anyone who gets an unusual request for money or sensitive information should treat it as a major warning sign. A refund notification can look like just another banking alert, especially when the underlying AT&T dispute began years ago. Checking the official FTC refund information before clicking, responding, or dismissing the payment can turn a confusing notification into a straightforward consumer protection story.
