It’s an old cliche: if you do what you love, you’ll neverwork a day in your life – though I’m not sure that’s entirely true. I’m writing to you from a quiet log cabin, finally taking a breath after nearly a decade spent crisscrossing the globe with a camera in my hand and dogs in my heart. Now, surrounded by nature, and with the Southern Alps of New Zealand rising behind me, I’m able to reflect on what I’ve created with this project, and what it took to get here. If I’m honest, it’s a little overwhelming. This has been the most ambitious and challenging thing I’ve ever done. I guess what is true is that Dogs of the World has been a pure labour of love - Craig Turner-Bullock Basque shepherd Northeastern Spain In the lush, green mountains of Catalonia, among yellow wildflowers and stone farmhouses, I met Bat the Basque shepherd. Bursting with energy, friendliness and an eagerness to work, he embodied everything I’d read about this traditional herding breed of the Basque people. Despite their rural roots, beagles are highly adaptable – and none more so than Archie. I met him in central London, at Piccadilly Circus, surrounded by double-decker buses and the bright lights of the city. The timing was serendipitous – it was the platinum jubilee weekend for Queen Elizabeth II. Union Jack bunting fluttered overhead and giant screens displayed images of the Queen through the decades. Neapolitan mastiff Rome, Italy It was just after sunrise at the Colosseum in Rome. The summer heat had already begun to rise, brushing 30C by 6am. I arrived early, hoping to avoid the crowds and catch the soft morning light, and was met by a truly unforgettable pair: Ariana and Guappariello (Guappa for short). Few dogs could look so perfectly at home beneath the towering arches of the Colosseum, a place where many historians believe their ancestors – large, Molosser-type dogs used in Roman bloodsports – faced battle, pitted against wild animals and gladiators alike. In the quiet, wintry streets of Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, five Shiba Inu stood with regal confidence beneath the towering Yasaka Pagoda. Kinako, Tsukune, Oyuki, James jnr and Rin looked right at home among the narrow alleys and aged wooden facades, their presence as strong as the centuries-old temple behind them. Today, the Shiba Inu is Japan’s most popular companion dog, but its roots run deep into the country’s history. American hairless terrier Las Vegas Valley of Fire Getting to Las Vegas to photograph Carnage, Babycakes and Groot was an adventure in itself. Rare flash floods delayed our arrival by a full day and the Valley of Fire – our chosen shoot location – remained closed for several more. When the roads finally reopened, we made our way out into the deep red desert just as a storm rolled in. Then, in true desert drama, the storm cleared as quickly as it came, revealing a perfect rainbow and one of the most breathtaking sunsets I’ve ever seen. The American hairless terrier is a relatively new breed, originating from a rat terrier that produced a hairless pup in the 1970s. Kelpie Sydney, Australia The kelpie is a symbol of grit, intelligence and determination – a true-blue farm dog bred to handle the heat, dust and intensity of herding livestock across vast rural properties. But when it came time to photograph this Australian working-class hero, I chose an entirely different setting: Sydney’s McMahons Point, during the city’s annual Vivid festival.
