Альфред Молина признался, что много раз думал о том, чтобы бросить актерскую карьеру

Published August 27, 2026 Despite a career spanning more than four decades, Alfred Molina admits he's contemplated walking away from acting more times than he can count. Appearing on the August 24 episode of the Still Here Hollywood podcast with Steve Kmetko, the 73-year-old actor was asked point-blank whether he'd ever thought about quitting. His answer was immediate: "Loads." Molina explained that the urge tends to surface during moments of professional frustration rather than as any kind of considered decision. "There are times when things don't go right, or it's not working," he said. "And I've always been a bit impulsive like that." He was careful to note that these thoughts have always remained just that, an impulsive reaction rather than a real plan, and that he tries to interrogate the feeling rather than act on it. "What was it about this particular moment that made me feel that way? And it's usually to do with some inadequacy of mine. It's usually to do with some kind of lack of understanding about something." He traced some of that self-doubt back to the very start of his career, recalling blunt advice from the dean at his drama school, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. "When I left drama school, we all had to go in for a one-on-one with the dean who would give us his last bit of advice. He said to me, 'Don't be surprised if you don't start working until you're well into your 30s,'" Molina remembered. "He was basically saying, 'You're not leading man material.' That was something else that I heard at one point. And that stuff sticks, it kind of it can hurt and it can stick." He said the moments he's considered quitting have typically followed a sense of professional failure, "usually been when I've been trying to deal with a sense of failure, like I've failed or I haven't quite done as well as I should and maybe it's time to... but then something else will come up. I've thought about it but never done it." When Kmetko gently asked whether Molina had ever seen a therapist, Molina laughed and confirmed he currently does. He went on to offer a broader theory about actors and anxiety, suggesting that self-doubt is baked into the profession itself. "I have a theory that all actors have a gene missing," he said. "The process of wanting to be an actor is an attempt, somehow, to fill that gap to find that gene that completes the circle. I could be talking complete bollocks. I don't know. But I feel like we're starting from a point of trying to fix something." He noted that the stories actors tell most fondly about their careers rarely center on triumphs. "None of them. They're all about disasters, humiliations, betrayals, failures. It's all about that. And I think that's part of our that's part of why we do it. It's part of this need that we have." Molina began his career on the West End, winning an Olivier Award for a 1980 revival of Oklahoma! before making his film debut in Raiders of the Lost Ark at 28. On Broadway, he's earned Tony nominations for Art, Fiddler on the Roof and Red, and picked up BAFTA nominations for his film work in Frida and An Education. His broader filmography includes Boogie Nights, Chocolat, The Da Vinci Code, Frozen 2, The Boroughs and Remarkably Bright Creatures, in which he voiced Marcellus the octopus. He remains best known to many audiences as Otto Octavius, or Doc Ock, in 2004's Spider-Man 2, a role he reprised in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
