Технология оптических дисков Folio Photonics выходит на рынок Бразилии в партнерстве с Savartus

Folio Photonics optical archive tech is heading to Brazil
Folio Photonics optical disk tech is being used by Savartus and OAIS Cloud to provide Archive-as-a-Service in Brazil.
OAIS Cloud is a Brazilian digital storage cloud provider and will act as the strategic partner responsible for promoting, implementing and operating the joint solution for designated Brazilian accounts, while also providing Archive-as-a-Service offerings built on the new platform. Savartus develops enterprise-class optical archive infrastructure for large-scale digital preservation and long-term data retention. It was founded in late 2024 as an independent spin-off from Rimage Corporation’s Active Archive division. Folio Photonics is developing multi-layer optical disks with up to 32 layers.First generation ones could hold between 1 and 2 TB of data, with several mounted in a cartridge. It raised $8 million in A-round funding in June.
Steven Santamaria, CEO, Folio Photonics, said: “The growth of AI, scientific data and digital government are creating an unprecedented need for storage technologies that are both economically sustainable and built for long retention periods. Folio Photonics’ multilayer optical media is designed to dramatically increase archival density while reducing energy consumption and long-term storage costs. This partnership brings that innovation into a complete preservation architecture that can help organizations protect their most valuable digital assets for generations.”
By combining OAIS Cloud's ISO 16363-certified digital preservation environment and ISO 14721 (OAIS) preservation architecture with Savartus’ autonomous storage infrastructure and Folio Photonics’ optical media technology, the system is designed to preserve rapidly growing volumes of digital information securely, authentically and independently of technological change for generations.
Savartus provides Enterprise Laser Storage immutable optical archives with ELS 8000 and ELS 10K. These use Blu-ray or Folio Photonics media. Specifically Folio 500GB and 1 TB Folio discs in 12 media disc cartridges (similar in size to LTO). Cartridges are loaded to magazines with 30 or 36 cartridge slots. The current technology roadmap ranges up to 10TB/medium.
The firm says the TCO of its ELS-8000 is better than AWS Deep Glacier and 32 TB HDD archives after 5 years, and approaches tape archive TCO but without tape's need for media refreshes and upgrades.
The three partners say a key innovation is the development of cloud infrastructures based on the EMP (Electro Magnretic Pulse) Immune Layer. Their overall archive architecture is intended for organizations managing extremely large repositories, including national archives, digital government platforms, scientific data, satellite imagery, financial records and cultural heritage collections.
Folio Photonics technology roadmap has commercial disc and drive availability scheduled for this year. No availability announcement has yet been made, by either Folio Photonics or Savartus.
CTO Gregg Kittilson was promoted from VP Engineering in June. His LInkedIn entry says he is: “Responsible for planning, managing and delivering Folio Photonics’ multilayer technology, intellectual property, optical dyes and film, discs, and drives to the market. Lead the technology, development, and manufacturing efforts internally and externally for films (including specification and selection of manufacturing equipment), discs, the optical pick-up unit (OPU), drive electronics and mechanics, and partner library optical storage systems.”
This announcement implies the tech has arrived in the market, which would give Folio P a market entry lead over competitors such as Cerabyte, Ewigbyte, Holomem, Microsoft (Project Silica), and Optera. It would also give Savartus unique technology for its archival system software.
We’ve asked Santamaria if Folio Photonics’ disc and drive tech is now commercially available, and will update this article when we hear back. We heard back and Folio Photonics tells us: "Nothing is commercially available yet." So, although this 3-way partnership has been announced, it is based on Folio P products that aren't available. When Santamaria says: "This partnership brings that innovation into a complete preservation architecture that can help organizations protect their most valuable digital assets for generations,” he's talking about a future possibility.
