Государственная газета Кубы впервые в позитивном ключе освятила традицию гадания на картах

The official newspaper of Matanzas province, Periódico Girón, took many by surprise with the final episode of the first season of its podcast, "Matanzas por Contar," which delved into the world of cartomancy. Historically, state media has either distanced itself from or outright ignored this spiritual Cuban tradition. Released on August 30, the episode titled "The Power of Cartomancy" runs for nearly 29 minutes. It features two journalists, known only as "Betty and Giselle," who explore the streets of Matanzas gathering public opinions and interviewing local cartomancer Lily González. What stands out is not merely the subject matter but the approach taken. The state-affiliated outlet portrays cartomancy positively, acknowledging it as a culturally legitimate practice without any ideological condemnation. Cuban cartomancers are described as part of "a deep-rooted spiritual and esoteric tradition blending indigenous, African, and European religious practices." Lily González has been practicing cartomancy since she was 17. She typically uses Spanish playing cards and explains her method straightforwardly: "I shuffle the cards 12 times, divide them into three piles, and reveal your home, your health, and your happiness." Public opinions on the practice vary widely. One Cuban commented, "I don't think it's so diabolic or dark." Conversely, another cautioned, "You have to be very careful because we live in a dual world, a world of darkness and light." Exploring the Dual Nature of Cartomancy The podcast distinguishes between two main branches of cartomancy in Cuba: the popular kind, which uses Spanish cards for inquiries into love, work, health, and the future, and the religious variety, which is integrated into Santería or spiritism to convey "messages from beyond." The episode also details the primary tools of divination: the Spanish deck, with 48 cards divided into four suits (gold coins, swords, clubs, and cups); the French deck, with 52 cards (hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades); and the Tarot of Marseille, consisting of 78 cards—22 major arcana and 56 minor arcana. Cartomancy's Role in Cuban Society The episode's description encapsulates the philosophy behind the practice: "The cards do not dictate destiny as an imperial decree; it is one's own decisions that chart the course." Reactions from Matanzas residents range from skepticism to intrigue. One woman admits that card readings challenge her: "And that's a lot of fun for me." Another Cuban observes, "Life is full of mysteries, and you never really know what the true reality is." Cartomancy is far from a fringe activity in Cuba. Since 2013, it has been recognized as a self-employed occupation under Resolution 42, with a minimum monthly fee of 150 pesos at the time. Well-known cartomancers in Havana often set up shop in high-tourist areas, though many also operate from their homes, sometimes requiring appointments due to long queues. This practice isn't limited to women. Men also demonstrate significant skill in reading cards. It's common for Cuban cartomancers to have undergone religious rituals or be spiritists, practicing Afro-Cuban religions or even Catholicism. In times of crisis and desperation, more people turn to esoteric consultations hoping for divine solutions to their problems. Cartomancy symbolizes the fusion of popular spirituality with everyday life. Notable figures include "Juana la Cubana," the renowned Santería priestess of Cathedral Square, and Marta Estévez, the cartomancer who inspired the celebrated film "Las profecías de Amanda," directed by Pastor Vega and starring Daisy Granados. "Matanzas por Contar" has covered various local history and mystical themes throughout its first season—from the Matanzas mummy to the mysteries of the French Pharmacy—but the episode on cartomancy closes the cycle, granting it a special place in the state media's productions.
