Два молодых кубинца погибли при попытке нелегальной эмиграции в Мексику

Tragedy struck in the waters off Sandino, a municipality in the westernmost part of Pinar del Río, as two young Cubans drowned during an ill-fated human smuggling operation intended for Cancún, Mexico. The incident was reported by the Facebook page "De canallas y sus canalladas," known for its pro-government stance and focus on events in that western province. The identities of the victims were not disclosed by the source. Unraveling the Details of the Incident According to the report, a small speedboat with a single engine illegally entered Cuban waters near Manuel Lazo (also known as "Cayuco") in Sandino. Its mission: to carry out a human trafficking operation. Onboard were three young individuals acting as crew members, who lacked the essential maritime experience for such a perilous journey. They were joined by 13 other passengers, all bound for Cancún. During the voyage, the boat's engine malfunctioned. In a frantic attempt to return to shore, the vessel neared Los Paredones, off the coast of El Uberal, south of Sandino. Here, several passengers leaped into the sea, desperately trying to reach land. Tragically, two young individuals did not survive the ordeal. The three crew members were apprehended and now face legal proceedings. A comment on the original post highlighted a crucial detail: "The community retrieved the bodies; fishermen teamed up, and local businesses purchased fuel to aid in the search," indicating that the recovery effort was not solely conducted by state authorities. The Official Narrative and Its Discrepancies The official narrative labels the tragedy as a result of human trafficking and the U.S. embargo, urging against political manipulation of the event. State media, such as Juventud Rebelde, employed a similar narrative during the October 2022 Bahía Honda boat sinking, where the Ministry of the Interior framed it as a trafficking operation, despite survivors and families disputing that claim. Comments beneath the post counter this narrative. One user wrote, "Not a single comment about Cuba's poor governance or the suffocating policies of a so-called socialist government. It takes nerve to blame others while ignoring the real culprits behind the country's miserable living conditions." Another added, "If Cuba weren't in such a state, people wouldn't be forced to resort to such measures. I also risked my life just to give my family a slightly better life." A third testimony, from someone claiming to have known the victims, was particularly poignant: "Don't politicize this. It was a horrific event; they were my friends. I came with my child, determined to make it or die trying. No one forced me; I did it to secure a better future." Several users highlighted the difficulty of emigrating legally. "And another thing: you apply for a passport, and it never arrives. So, how are people supposed to leave?" "When a nation emigrates, its government is failing," and "Two young lives were lost trying to find a better life." A Tragedy Amidst a Mass Exodus The deaths of these two young Cubans occur against the backdrop of an unprecedented migration crisis. Over 245,000 Cubans emigrated in 2025, with more than 50% being under 35 years old. In 2024, at least 142 Cuban rafters perished attempting to reach the United States, as reported by the International Organization for Migration. The Cancún route remains one of the most active: just this month, a federal court in Miami sentenced a member of a network trafficking Cubans between the island, Mexico, and southern Florida to 25 years in prison. Court documents linked this organization to approximately 25 deaths during its operations.
