Рэпер El Funky воссоединился с матерью спустя пять лет после изгнания из Кубы

Cuban rapper El Funky shared an emotional video on Instagram this Thursday, celebrating a heartwarming reunion with his mother after a five-year separation due to his exile from Cuba. "Thank You God for allowing me to hug my mom after 5 years," wrote the artist, whose real name is Eliécer Márquez Duany, alongside a post that quickly garnered dozens of comments. The response from his followers was immediate and filled with emotion. Many shared their own stories of family separation, such as one who commented, "So beautiful, bro, enjoy it. That's the greatest gift. I haven't been able to hug mine for 6 years." Others simply celebrated the moment: "Speechless. Priceless hugs. Welcome and congratulations." This reunion with his mother strikes a collective nerve among the Cuban diaspora. Family separation is one of the most painful consequences of the exodus that has emptied the island in recent years. El Funky's experience—an artist who lived through this fracture both personally and publicly—reflects thousands of similar stories. "Having your mother close is priceless," summarized one of his followers in the comments, with a sentiment that requires no translation for those familiar with growing up in Cuba and ending up far from everything they loved. El Funky left Cuba after enduring political harassment by the regime, a direct result of his involvement in "Patria y Vida," the song released in February 2021 that became the anthem of the July 11 protests that year and won a Latin Grammy, as well as his support for the San Isidro Movement and political prisoner Maykel Osorbo. In exile, his immigration status in the United States was on the verge of collapse in 2025. In late April of that year, U.S. immigration authorities denied him permanent residency, giving him approximately 30 days to leave the country, citing a prior conviction in Cuba for marijuana possession. This case sparked a wave of international solidarity and extensive media coverage. After intervention by his lawyer and the reopening of his case, El Funky announced he would not be deported. Months later, in September of that year, he successfully obtained permanent residency in the United States following a successful appeal, ultimately paving the way for his reunion with his mother.
