Как превратить старые гаджеты в умные устройства за выходные без пайки

That drawer full of retired electronics doesn't have to be a graveyard. With a free weekend and zero soldering skills, you can turn three gadgets you probably already own into tools that actually earn their keep every day. None of these projects require buying new hardware, and each one can realistically be finished between breakfast and dinner. That cracked phone becomes a wall-mounted dashboard Fully Kiosk Browser is the difference between a demo and a fixture If you've got an old Android phone sitting in a drawer with a cracked screen or a battery that's too weak for any real usage, it's the perfect candidate for a wall-mounted smart home control panel. Start by giving it a factory reset so you're not carrying over old accounts or background bloat, and skip signing into Google if you'd rather sideload apps through F-Droid. Once that's done, the fastest route is to install the Home Assistant Companion app or simply opening a browser and pointing it at your Home Assistant instance. A progressive web app (PWA) install via Chrome takes just a few taps and updates itself automatically, not to mention you don't have to deal with app stores. For an even better and true kiosk feel, Fully Kiosk Browser is worth the seven dollar license or free watermarked version. It locks the phone into a single app, hides the navigation bar, and reboots itself if it crashes, so you're not fiddling with it every few days. From there, you can build a dedicated dashboard view in Home Assistant with whatever you need and mount the phone on the wall near a power outlet. Set the screen to never sleep while charging and you've got an always-on display that rivals a $100+ smart display. Your old router still has one more job in it Disable DHCP, match the SSID, and let devices roam Wi-Fi dead zones in the house are almost always a router problem, and that old router you swapped out for a mesh system can fix it without spending a dime. As before, the process starts with a factory reset, usually by holding the reset pinhole for about 10 seconds until the lights blink. After that, connect to the router's admin panel (usually located at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) using the credentials printed on the device label. Next, you need to disable the old router's DHCP server so it stops handing out its own IP addresses and creating conflicts with your main router. Give it a static IP within your main network's range, copy over the same SSID and password as your primary Wi-Fi so devices roam seamlessly between the two, and then connect it to your main router with an Ethernet cable for the most reliable performance. A lot of routers also have a repeater or bridge mode that simplifies this process and even lets you connect to your main router wirelessly. The only thing left to do from this point onwards is to position the router between your main router and wherever you need the stronger signal and you're good to go. Additionally, if your router is supported, flashing it with OpenWRT or DD-WRT firmware can give you even more features that make the setup more streamlined. A dead webcam becomes a doorway camera with Frigate go2rtc turns a USB feed into a stream Frigate can use If you've got an old USB webcam lying around, you can pair it with a Raspberry Pi (or just run a really long USB cable) and turn it into a security camera without adding another cloud subscription, provided you're using Frigate and Home Assistant. Once connected, identify the device path, and use Frigate's built-in go2rtc support to turn the webcam feed into a local stream. Frigate recommends checking the camera's available formats and resolutions first, then passing the USB device into its container if you run it through Docker. Add the camera to Frigate, connect Frigate to Home Assistant through MQTT or the HACS extension, and its live view, recordings, detected objects, and snapshots can appear as Home Assistant entities. Mount the webcam by a doorway, pet area, or package drop spot, and then you can create an automation that does whatever you want based on particular events. Old gadgets don't need a second career, just one job One clear job beats a week of troubleshooting Old gadgets do not need a second career that involves a soldering iron, custom firmware, or a week of troubleshooting. Sometimes the most useful upgrade is simply assigning a forgotten device one clear job and leaving it there. Start with the gadget you already have, keep the setup simple, and focus on a problem you deal with every day. By Sunday night, that drawer or outdated tech might feel a little less like clutter.
