William, most knew him as Bill, was born January 17, 1941 in Kinston, Alabama. On February 3, 1959 at age 18, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard in Dade City, Florida. His career was spent working on the water commanding several ships from Virginia to Maine. He and his crews protected our oceans, cleaned and repaired buoys to help those who navigated the vast ocean waters and also helped keep the waterways free of ice during the cold Maine winters. He served on the USCGC Nemesis during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. After 28 years of service, he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 on March 1, 1987. Following his retirement from the Coast Guard, he continued to work for several years. He worked in the lobster industry, as well as at Sears & Robuck and Sherwin Williams. His time after that was spent taking care of himself, his wife and their home where they loved being together. He also loved spending time with his daughters. Cooking for his girls, talking about and watching baseball and football and getting help with projects around the house made him happy. He will always be loved and remembered by his wife and daughters and is greatly missed by them. He was predeceased by his parents, Etheridge and Jimmie Roney, and sister-in-law Linda Roney.
