A MOTORWAY has been named the most dangerous in Britain for injury collisions.
The M606, a 2.5-mile spur running into Bradford from the M62, topped the list in a new study by Beck Evans, a used car dealership, which analysed all injury collisions recorded on British motorways between 2021 and 2025.
It found that the M606 recorded 4.72 injury collisions per mile per year—59 collisions in total over the five-year period—making it the highest rate of any motorway in Great Britain.
Sam Evans, director of Beck Evans, said: "Three of the four most crash-dense motorways in the country are shorter than five miles, and none of the three carries a major airport or a stretch of open rural carriageway.
"The pattern running through the whole table is that short motorways and city ring road sections take the top places, while longer motorways fill the bottom."
The most frequently involved car in collisions on the M606 was the Audi A3, appearing in six of the 59 incidents.
Second on the list was London’s M25, with 3.90 collisions per mile per year, totalling 2,302 incidents across its 118.2 miles.
The Ford Fiesta was the most common car involved, featuring in 147 collisions—the highest count for any model on a single motorway.
The M602 in Salford ranked third, with 2.93 collisions per mile per year. The BMW 3 Series was the most frequently involved car, appearing in five out of 60 collisions.
High collision rates involving certain car models do not necessarily mean they are unsafe.
Mr Evans said: "The models that are involved in the highest numbers of injury collisions, like the Ford Focus and the Vauxhall Corsa, appearing so often does not mean the cars themselves are inherently dangerous.
"They are hugely popular car models in the UK, especially among younger drivers, and if more people are driving them, they are inevitably going to end up in more collisions."
He added that buyers should be cautious when considering second-hand vehicles that have spent significant time on motorways.
He said: "Ask for the service book, ask what the last owner used it for, and take a long test drive at motorway speed rather than round the block, since a car that has spent five years commuting on the M25 will feel very different to one that has done the same mileage on quiet roads."
At the other end of the scale, Scotland’s M9 between Edinburgh and Stirling was found to be the safest motorway, with just 0.37 injury collisions per mile per year.
