With the Bayeux ‘Tapestry’ in the headlines, I thought it might be appropriate to draw attention to the fine work of Test Valley’s own ‘Tapestry’.
This was an impressive community effort which came together in 1990 and, like the famous work now on loan to the British Museum, is more accurately described as ‘embroidery’.
In 19 panels, the work represents 75 Test Valley hamlets, villages, parishes and towns and is the fruit of a project dreamed up and led by the late Councillor Laurie Porter. Unlike the Bayeux Tapestry, all of Test Valley’s 1,500 contributors (young and old) are known and recorded for posterity.
The attached image is just one of those panels, representing Stockbridge, Longstock, and Leckford, alongside a map of the Borough, which was the work of three other local skilled embroiderers. The panels are located at the Test Valley Borough Council offices at Beech Hurst.

Apart from featuring on BBC local TV and going on public display in Romsey Abbey for a time, the ‘Tapestry’ spawned a number of other projects: a musical composition (the Test Valley Tapestry Suite) written and performed locally, with a small group of professional musicians, by the renowned folk musician John Kirkpatrick; coloured postcards and a quality book produced in English, French and German. In 1996, the book found its way to the USA, with a copy presented to former President George Bush by Test Valley Mayor Councillor Ian Carr.
As Bayeux had been one of Laurie Porter’s inspirations for the Test Valley Tapestry, a copy was also sent to a major French Library in Normandy – which, interestingly, responded by sending ‘The Liberation of Calvados’, a record of another historical invasion — this time of Normandy by the Allies in 1944!
