В Пуле сохранилась уникальная лавка с полом, вытоптанном за 206 лет жизни

In some places, history is not locked in archives but etched into the ground beneath our feet. For 206 years, Poole’s heartbeat could be felt in a humble high-street shop as well as its maritime monuments. In this old town, nostalgia lives on in its best-loved shops as well as its seafaring history. Boones Hardware is a giant of Poole High Street and a cornerstone of community life. The beloved shop has survived two world wars, economic upheaval and the rise of modern retail. Through decades of change, generations of local families relied on the shop’s trusted service. Customers can buy a single screw or a handful of nails weighed on metal scales. Shoppers do not have to buy a tub of 100 pieces when they needed only three for a weekend job. Inside, the air carries the comforting scents of paraffin, wood polish and freshly cut timber. The industrial smell takes adults straight back to childhood Saturday errands. Floor-to-ceiling wooden drawers line the walls, each holding a particular bolt, bracket or brass hinge. Staff in know their way around the towering stock, pencils tucked behind their ears. They know the stock by heart and could find the most obscure plumbing fitting or garden tool in seconds. Customers bring in broken, rusty parts from unknown machines, and the man behind the counter found the exact replacement without hesitation. But Boones’ real magic lies beneath customers’ feet. The shop became a local legend not just for its huge stock of tools but for its deeply uneven wooden floorboards. For more than a century, shoppers queued at the counter for advice on DIY jobs and household repairs, wearing their mark into the building. Daily footfall from work boots, Sunday shoes and children’s scuffed school shoes wore deep trenches into the solid wood. As Poole changed around it, decades of customers standing in the busy shop wore away the thick timber. During the 20th century, locals stood on those floors while preparing their homes for wartime blackouts and post-war rebuilding. Quay fishermen, boatyard craftsmen and homeowners stood shoulder to shoulder on the same wooden planks. The shop brings rich and poor together to buy what they needed for everyday life. The mechanical till chimed as local gossip filled the shop and feet wore down the wood. The worn, wavy floor is more than an architectural quirk. It's a physical map of the people who built, repaired and maintained Dorset’s homes. Every dip and hollow recalled conversations about leaky pipes, paintwork and neglected gardens. As brightly lit chain stores spread along the high street, Boones held its ground. It has stayed independent, keeping the personal service customers valued. W E Boone & Co was established in 1820.
