В Брэдфорде открылся балет «Джентльмен Джек» по мотивам жизни Энн Листер

Northern Ballet’s Gentleman Jack arrives at Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre today (September 3), bringing Anne Lister’s story to the stage. The production offers a new interpretation of one of Yorkshire’s most remarkable historical figures and has prompted interest in the real woman behind the television drama and ballet. The ballet will run at the Alhambra until September 5. Visit Bradford’s Gentleman Jack-inspired itinerary sets out places linked to her life and legacy across Halifax, Bradford and Saltaire. The journey begins at The Piece Hall in Halifax, a Georgian courtyard that featured prominently in the BBC and HBO series, standing in for 19th-century Halifax. Visitors can explore the heritage site and find a statue of Lister, the pioneering diarist, traveller and entrepreneur whose coded journals revealed an account of lesbian life in the 19th century. Nearby Wainhouse Tower offers views across the landscape Lister would have known, although it was built after her lifetime. People who take on its 369-step climb can see across Calderdale and beyond, gaining a different perspective on the region that shaped her life. Her presence remains visible around Halifax. A colourful mural by artist Anna Jaxe appears on the exterior wall of the Ring O’ Bells near Halifax Minster. The Minster houses Lister’s tombstone and is the starting point of the annual Anne Lister Pilgrimage. From Halifax, the route continues to Bradford, the world’s first UNESCO City of Film. At the Alhambra, visitors can see Northern Ballet’s production, while nearby Little Germany provides another link with the series. Grand Victorian warehouses and cobbled streets were transformed into 1830s Halifax for filming. The district became one of the programme’s recognisable locations and remains a destination for fans. The final stop is Saltaire, the UNESCO World Heritage village, which is celebrating 25 years of World Heritage status in 2026. Parts of the village and Salts Mill appeared in Gentleman Jack, giving visitors another chance to walk through places seen on screen. Independent galleries and shops, cafés and restaurants, and preserved Victorian architecture add to the visit. Together these locations connect visitors with the landscapes, heritage and stories of Anne Lister’s Yorkshire. Her life continues to reach new audiences through television, theatre and ballet. The itinerary also links entertainment with local history, allowing visitors to move between filmed settings, memorials, viewpoints and buildings associated with the region. It also gives a route for people who want to understand how Halifax and Bradford appear in Lister’s story.
