A SCI-FI star who has appeared in Game of Thrones and Doctor Who is excited to return to a “wonderful” sci-fi convention this weekend. Ross Mullan, who played a White Walker in the fantasy series Game of Thrones, will attend Invasion Colchester for the third time. Describing it as a “beautiful event”, Ross loves the fact it raises funds for charities in the city. “It’s wonderful that an event like that takes place every year, and generates interest in Colchester,” he told the Gazette. “I hope other cities blueprint it and do the same.” Ross says he is delighted to be invited back to Invasion Colchester. “I always feel very welcome - the fans in Colchester are very friendly," he said. “It’s great to meet people who love all the different things I’ve done, from Game of Thrones to Doctor Who, or Numberjacks to Bear Behaving Badly.” Despite working in theatre from the age of 12, the 59-year-old actor says success came later in life, thanks to puppeteering a blue bear in a hit CBBC programme. “My whole career has been full of twists and turns,” he said. “But Bear Behaving Badly was a huge opportunity for me, which changed the trajectory of my career completely. “Without playing Nev the Bear, I would never have appeared in Doctor Who, Game of Thrones or the film I’m working on right now.” Ross says he owes a lot “to that little blue bear”, which saw him work alongside TV presenter Barney Harwood and the late Bella Emberg, best known for playing Blunderwoman in the Russ Abbot Show. Originally hailing from Canada, Ross visited London on holiday in 1999 and has lived in the UK ever since. Currently, he is shooting a sci-fi film in Norwich, starring Walking Dead actor Chandler Riggs. Produced by Blood Axe Studios, Ross will play a cult leader in Rune – Supervoid 1. “It’s a good old-school family sci-fi action film,” he said. Invasion Colchester will host attractions throughout the city centre this Saturday, September 5, from 10am to 4pm. Ross will be meeting fans for photos and autographs at Lion Walk.
