A THEME park is helping students take their first steps into the world of work through hands-on experience. Gulliver’s World in Warrington has welcomed around 1,000 students over the past year through its Work Experience Workshops, offering a practical introduction to careers in the leisure and hospitality sector. The programmes are designed to help students build teamwork, leadership, communication, problem-solving, and presentation skills while exploring a wide range of roles across the industry. Mel Burrows-Carr, group training and talent manager at Gulliver’s Theme Park Resorts, said: "Schools and colleges are increasingly seeing the value and importance of investing in work experience opportunities for their students to give them real-life experience of work and our workshops our meeting that demand." "We provide students, as individuals or through partnerships with their school or college, with a unique chance to discover the wide range of careers available within the leisure industry, whether they're interested in hospitality, engineering, events, retail or guest services, young people can gain real-world experience and develop valuable workplace skills." Gulliver’s World offers a one-day Careers in Leisure programme covering roles in catering, retail, rides, and animal experiences, along with specialist workshops in maintenance and engineering, hospitality, and events and creative careers. A two-day immersive experience is also available, including an overnight stay, meals, and evening entertainment. Students can take part in banqueting event setups, stock management in shops, hotel housekeeping, and other operational tasks. They also hear from professionals in areas such as accountancy and engineering. Ms Burrows-Carr said: "The workshops are really cost effective and designed to be engaging, interactive and informative, helping young people understand what different roles involve while building confidence and practical experience that will support their future career choices. "We've seen many students progress from work experience placements into seasonal roles with Gulliver's, which is incredibly rewarding. "We are a family business so nurturing talent and supporting people into a career is really important to us." The resort also offers longer-term placements for college students in departments such as accounts, joinery, painting, guest services, and administration. Several students have secured employment with Gulliver’s following their placements. Gulliver’s World, the second of the company’s four UK resorts, opened in 1989 and now features more than 50 rides, attractions, shows, and activities. These include Desperado Drop, animatronic dinosaurs, the Grand Prix Racer rollercoaster, and overnight options such as hotel rooms, lodges, dens, and tipis at Wilderness Wharf.
