Calnex built its reputation supplying test and measurement equipment to the global telecommunications industry, helping customers validate the performance of increasingly complex communications networks. The company benefited from years of investment in 5G infrastructure and cloud computing, delivering strong growth after its AIM flotation in 2020. As telecoms operators around the world slowed spending amid rising interest rates and economic uncertainty, demand weakened across the sector. In late 2023, chief executive Tommy Cook acknowledged that Calnex was feeling the effects of a telecommunications downturn that had rippled through the industry. The response has been deliberate and sustained. Rather than abandoning telecoms, Calnex has sought to expand the applications for its technology into adjacent markets including digital infrastructure, cloud computing, data centres and government and defence. That strategy featured heavily in today's AGM tradingupdate. The company highlighted a recently-secured digital infrastructure contract with a major US financial institution and said customer evaluations are underway for new applications in the digital infrastructure market. It also reported growing interest in its network emulation products and continued progress with next-generation data centre assurance technologies and higher-capacity synchronisation testing equipment. Read more: Earlier this year, Calnex reported that digital infrastructure and government and defence were becoming increasingly important contributors to orders, helping offset still-subdued conditions in telecoms. Demand from hyperscale cloud providers, data centre operators and government customers was identified as a growing source of opportunity. Another important element is market access. Calnex spent much of the past two years reshaping its sales strategy following the end of a long-standing relationship with Spirent Communications, which had historically accounted for a substantial share of revenues. The company has since focused on building a broader network of distribution partners across key markets. The AGM statement suggests those efforts are beginning to bear fruit. Management said its partnership with Viavi has expanded and is providing access to a larger installed customer base, while wider channel partnerships are strengthening routes to market. The telecoms market remains subdued, and Calnex is not yet claiming a major breakthrough, but the company increasingly looks less dependent on the fortunes of one industry than it did a few years ago. If current investments translate into commercial wins and product launches as planned, management's expectation of accelerated growth looks credible.
