West Yorkshire's Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Alison Lowe has been sworn into the House of Lords as Baroness Lowe of Armley. The Baroness took part in the ceremony on September 1, marking a major step in her public service career. Baroness Lowe said the occasion was “a real honour and a privilege” and spoke about the influence of her late parents. Baroness Lowe said: "This moment makes me think of my parents, whose values of fairness, hard work and service to others have guided me throughout my life." Her family attended the ceremony, including her children and grandchildren. She said their support had helped her throughout her working life. Baroness Lowe said: "It was wonderful, joyful. My family was all there." As a History and Medieval Studies graduate, she said she understood the importance of taking part in a ceremony followed for centuries. Baroness Lowe said: "This a process which is centuries old and done to the absolute letter of the law." Baroness Lowe said: "I am a historian so to walk in the footsteps of generations before me was surreal." She said fellow members of the House of Lords had welcomed her warmly. Baroness Lowe said: "There was love across the benches, everyone was very generous in welcoming me." Her new role will include raising issues affecting West Yorkshire and other parts of the North. She said she wanted to strengthen the region’s voice in Westminster. Baroness Lowe said: "I want to strengthen the northern voice within Westminster; I am one of many who represent us." Her work is expected to draw on her experience in policing and public service. Issues including violence against women and girls, poverty and regional inequality will be among the matters she wants to highlight. Baroness Lowe said: "I am just a girl from Seacroft." She said her background in Seacroft continued to influence her work. She also pointed to similarities between Seacroft and Armley. Baroness Lowe said: "Armley, which I look after is a similar area to Seacroft, there is a lot of white working class people with pockets of minorities." She said her childhood had shaped her belief in opportunity and the need for support. She said: "When I was a kid, we had nothing, we were poor. "I want to be a message of hope, that with hard work and passion anything can be done, but there needs to be support available." Despite joining the Lords, Baroness Lowe said she would remain Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime. Baroness Lowe said: "I'm going to be in that role till 2028, whilst juggling commitments here." She said her priority remained representing West Yorkshire while bringing local concerns to national politics. Her appointment gives the region another voice in Parliament and allows her to combine her existing public service work with responsibilities in the Lords.
