THE owners of one of Newcastle’s most distinctive historic venues are marking a major milestone.
Blackfriars in Newcastle is celebrating 25 years under the ownership of Andy and Sam Hook, who have transformed the 13th-century former Dominican friary into a vibrant hospitality and heritage complex.
When the Hooks launched Blackfriars Restaurant in 2001, the business occupied little more than what is now the restaurant’s main dining room.
Today, the venue has grown into a 'thriving' complex, including an award-winning restaurant, Banquet Hall, Cookery School, Brewery, Wine Tasting Room, Parlour Bar, meetings and function rooms, and Cloister Garden.
Andy Hook, managing director of Blackfriars Restaurant, said: "Twenty-five years ago, we thought we had taken on a small café.
"What we actually inherited was 800 years of history and over the last quarter of a century, thousands of people have helped us add another chapter.
"No one builds something like this alone.
"Blackfriars has been shaped by our staff, customers, suppliers, contractors, historians, friends, family and everyone who has chosen to spend their time here."
The anniversary is being marked with a private dinner for guests, including North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, representatives from Experience North East England, friends, family, original suppliers, and long-standing members of the Blackfriars team.
With support from Historic England and Newcastle City Council, Andy and Sam expanded the business over time while preserving the character of the medieval friary.
Blackfriars has also focused on sharing the site's history through heritage tours, medieval banquets, historical talks, cookery classes, educational projects, and immersive experiences.
Andy said: "Buildings are just stone and restaurants are just tables.
"It is people who make somewhere special.
"We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped Blackfriars not only survive but thrive."
Several team members have worked at Blackfriars for more than a decade, contributing to its success and helping to build a loyal customer base among diners, visitors, businesses, and cultural partners.
The restaurant has received numerous accolades, including the Taste of England award at the North East Tourism Awards.
Andy said: "Blackfriars has always been a place for the community.
"We are proud to be the latest custodians of that extraordinary story."
The couple also own Dobson and Parnell on Newcastle Quayside and Hinnies in Whitley Bay through their Hooked on Group.
Their commitment to hospitality and heritage has helped make Blackfriars a popular destination for locals, tourists, and businesses alike.
It continues to blend food, history, and education in one of the region’s most atmospheric venues.
