Bury actress Kate O’Flynn is up for an Emmy for her role in a critically acclaimed Apple TV series Widow’s Bay.
The actress, originally from the Holcombe Brook area, is nominated in the ‘outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series’ category at this year’s awards for her role as Patricia in the hit show.
Horror-comedy Widow’s Bay tells the story of a small fishing island’s plans to become a tourist hotspot, despite its long history of bad luck and sinister goings on.
Leading the town’s ambitious scheme is mayor Tom Loftis (Matthew Rhys), who, having not grown up on the island, refuses to believe the local tales of ghosts and curses.
Patricia is the mayor’s assistant, who has also been an outsider in the community, but has to step up to help save the town from the mysterious forces threatening it.
The 10-episode series, which hit the streaming service in April, has been lauded by critics.
The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan gave it five out five stars, describing it as a “rich, wonderful and laugh-out-loud series”, while the Hollywood Reporter said it was an “intriguingly creepy, oddly cozy, unevenly effective horror-comedy”.
In total, Widow’s Bay has been shortlisted in a staggering 19 different Emmy categories, including a best leading actor nomination for Rhys Matthew, outstanding comedy series and a number of technical awards, to name but a few.
In the outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series category, O’Flynn is up against fellow cast member Dale Dickey, as well as Michelle Pfeiffer (Margo’s Got Money Troubles), Hannah Einbinder (Hacks), Megan Stalter (Hacks), Jessica Williams (Shrinking) and Janelle James (Abbott Elementary).
The winners will be announced at the ceremony on September 14.
There might be more awards on the horizon for O’Flynn, who is set to star in acclaimed British director Mike Leigh’s final film ‘Tender Loving Care’.
O’Flynn has been working with Leigh for 20 years, having earned her big screen breakthrough in Leigh’s 2008 film ‘Happy-go-Lucky’.
The former Bury Girls’ Grammar School student began acting at a young age with the Royal Exchange Theatre’s youth programme in Manchester.
Elsewhere, O’Flynn has also starred in Channel 4 comedy Everyone Else Burns, Sky/HBO drama Landscapers, Paul Abbott’s No Offence, and the films Mr Turner and Bridget Jones’s Baby.
On stage, she has appeared in the National Theatre productions Port and A Taste of Honey, as well as The Glass Menagerie.
